While driving you see a family of ducks in the road. Changing lanes isn't an option due to a car in the next lane. You can slam on your brakes and save the family but you'll get rear ended. Or you can risk killing them and save your car. Pick!

Why not slow down but not slam the brakes?

I'd rather the ducks live then the douche behind me following too closely.

I'd try to spare the ducklings, but I hit the gas for those damn Canadian geese in the the Twin Cities. They act like they own the road. I disagree.

Wouldn't be the first, nor last, animal I've killed.

Insurance usually won't cover the damage I you slammed in the brakes for an animal, it's considered to be more hazardous than hitting the animal.

When I took a drivers license in Europe we learned to stop for a big animal, not small. Big is a dog, small a cat. Cat lovers were offended but that's the guideline.

I would keep going, stop and pull over, get out, and grab dinner.

My car and family come first. I'll try to avoid it by slowing with hazards on, but I will not get into a car accident for animals.

I would put on my brakes & yell at them to hurry out of the way. But I wouldn't stop if it meant getting rear-ended. That would possibly result in me getting injured. I would feel horrible for hitting the ducks. But my health is more important to me.

Gas. Sorry ducks, but you're just ducks. Hopefully the ones that do survive learn to not waddle across the road. I would feel pretty bad about hitting them, tho. Can't help that.

Being plagued with an altruistic personality, I can't imagine NOT making an attempt to avert their deaths.

Even if it meant a trip to the dealership for repairs.

And the car behind me... at fault for not maintaining proper distance.

Brakes. I need a new car anyway. Hopefully the guy behind me hits it hard enough

Brakes. My first job when driving is to keep from hitting anything. If it was snowing and I'd risk losing control braking suddenly, I'd answer differently, but I'm not going to kill something just because some asshole doesn't know the 2 second rule.

This situation actually comes up regularly because we love across the street from a farm with a big lake. Ducks and wild turkeys are in the road pretty regularly and everybody slows down for them, and I've risked getting rear ended before.

We LIVE across the street, not love.
Damn these giant fingers.

It's happened to me a few times too. Each time, all drivers came to a complete halt. I like to think no one would see ducks and not attempt to stop.

I could try to reason this out but instinctively I would probably keep going.

Since braking would mean a sure rear end, and running over them would only "risk" killing them, I'd go with option 2.

I would tap the brakes slowly wouldn't be going that fast. Unless you're taking a curve you should be able to see that far ahead of you be able to break.

It really depends on the size of the ducks.
If they'll cause damage, I'm stopping. If not, I keep going.

If I'm driving my wife's car, the bumper/valance is plastic and low enough that an adult duck would cause damage.
