They declared independence on the 2nd, the signed the paper on the 4th

That depends on the definition of "declare." They voted unanimously on 7/2; the document was adopted on 7/4. After that it was published & distributed. I have no idea when news reached England. The document wasn't signed until later. I voted 7/2.

It was declared on July 2, when all the people involved were in independence hall in Philadelphia. It was printed on July 4. This according to David McCollough on 60 Minutes tonight.

Wikipedia says the Continental Congress voted to declare independence on 7/2 (the simple answer, assuming accuracy), the text of the document was ratified 7/4. The initial printing of the document (the Dunlap broadside) was done the night of 7/4.

July 2nd. The document was simply dated, "July 4th, 1776."
