Has a debate on SoH ever made you cry or visibly angry?
Yes to both. (I assume crying with laughter counts?)
Visibly angry, yes. Pretty much anything that deals with gay rights, abortion, or gun control. Also when people openly generalize.
You have to remember to take a breath and know you can only do so much to educate ppl.
No, I haven't gotten that wrapped up in things. I'd say Cowboy came closest but that's why he's ignored nowadays.
BTW posting this from the web version. So much nicer using a real keyboard to post comments!
I'm pretty laid back. I may get a little upset but nothing 5 seconds of reflection and a civil tongued rebuke won't fix ;)
Not on a debate, but I've had a few attacks directed at me simply for being a teen, and that really gets to me. There was once a point on SoH where I refused to say that I was a teen, and I'm not sure if that way was better.
Darn kids these days with their political ideals.... ;) jk, jk
I kinda like that people know I'm a teen because I hope I can change how they see teens. There are days though when I wish I could go back to everyone thinking I was an adult.
Haha :P Actually, judging by your username, we're pretty similar politically.
There has been a few times when I've been a little surprised to find a user is a teen, it's good to challenge stereotypes.
Absolutely nothing wrong with being a teen. Your input on here is valuable and appreciated. Keep up the good work puppylvr.
Thank you :) I really appreciate it when people take that viewpoint.
Well, as any of my followers know, i can definitely relate to puppy. In some cases, us teens are more intelligent and mature than some adult users, am I right puppy? Btw, are you the gal, or guy in the picture? Just wondering whose gonna be........
Apart of the "teens for tea party" group. Hahahahaha.
Haha I'm the girl, pipes :)
I figured. Men don't traditionally love puppies.
Haha before I switched the profile picture, a few people thought I was a guy. O.o
Wow until now I thought you were a guy. And for a long time I thought you were an adult. You do not present your opinions in an immature way, so I think you deserve the same amount of respect as anyone else.
Thank you :) It means a lot to me because I try my best to show the mature side of myself.
A n g e r y !
I stop before I get to that point.
Ive never cried...but there have been several people who have been nasty to me when it really didn't call for it and it was and continues to be upsetting to me because it still happens.
I would never let you people get to me like that.
6/2(1+2) caused me physical pain...
I had a LOT of fun with that one!
One of the best ever!
??? Just use PEMDAS. So 6/2 X 3. Then 6/6. Then the answer is 1.
GAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! I can take no more!
Multiplication and division have the same priority in the order of operations. You solve them LEFT to RIGHT. Therefore it is:
Oh no, the bad memories are returning!
Ooooo. I'm sorry. But I am right. With PEMDAS, the multiplication goes before? No? Ugh oh, I feel your pain now.
No, PEMDAS is right, but a lot of people don't realize that the M and D (as well as the A and S) share the same priority.
I know they are tied together as like a group but I didn't think you had t do that. Well, that's not how learned it.
------- = 1
2 x 3
6/2 x 3 = 9
Are you CRAZY bringing that up!?! It's like inviting the Devil himself in for a quick snack.
You must have liked it a little, since you're poking the issue again . . .
Oh god not ANOTHER one convinced he's right.
It will NEVER end.
This morning on one if your polls from yesterday. Had me in a funk for quite awhile.
Honestly. Yes to both. I've been visibly angry in debates where the opposing side doesn't acknowledge a different opinion (although I've been guilty myself).
And I've cried. Both in laughter, And actual meaningful exchanges.
Most recently 'sloanerrific' and I remembering old friends a week or so ago.
Cry or visibly angry, no. Upset and disappointed, yes. I've wanted to leave SOH a number of times. My faith in the American people does better when I'm not interacting some of the lowest of the lowest. Sorry folks. :-). Pizza pizza emoticons.
No pizza! Ahhhh!! *music notes* You don't know what you've got till it's gone *music notes*
Hmmm. I think I'm going out to get pizza now.
If I posted my true feelings ALL the time I would be in debates in 9 out of 10 of the polls. I just don't have the time or energy for that. On several occasions, I have written a comment and deleted because I knew my point(s) would be misinterpreted.
I believe that we all do that. It's mainly for our own sanity.
I often feel like that on the main polls. There have bee many times I thought I could add value to a conversation, but there were already so many spiteful comments going around, I decided to just keep my two cents to myself.
I've don't that countless times - started a comment, realized I didn't have the strength to go there, closed it, unsent. Usually many times a day.
*done, not don't
Cry - no
Angry - sometimes
It can be frustrating to get your point across to people via text sometimes. I'd rather do it face to face with drinks.
Darn no emoji..
I agree though
What he said. No way.
You wanna fight me?? Come at me, bro-ski!
Well, is it arguably better than "first"? How do they compare?
'First' is *sooooo* 2012.
Live in the now!
Yea! Me in the now!
I don't think I've had visible emotions caused by the app.
But I sure did have some internal ones.
I don't cry over SoH and you wouldn't see me angry if you were next to me. Maybe tense, but nothing more than that.
My comments may look angry, I do feel offended when people try to ridicule my arguments. I may give them back but I often just add ...
...them to my ignore list. It only has a handful or two.
I don't ignore anyone. If anything, I might find their ignorance amusing. If theyre not debating me. I just hate it when people are just plain stupid and their arguments reflect it.
They can make comments which I would rate as ignorance. I may try to reply or just let it go. What gets me is name calling. I should be allowed to have my opinion without being called juvenile or worse.
People are crazy. I'm not trying to be mean but most of them are republicans. I've had my fair share of names. "masshole" "something along the lines of childish" the childish or dumb ones really get me since I'm a kid.
Yes I've seen the mass.... I would be offended by that too. There's no reason to use such words. That's my point. You may get it from republicans but I will claim it comes from all sides.
The only thing that gets me angry is when people get on a high-horse and denigrate, ridicule, mock, harass, bully, and otherwise act like raging hemorrhoidal ass-hats towards others. Ignorance isn't evil, but behavior sure can be.
"raging hemorrhoidal ass-hats"
You just have a way with words.
I agree with you. And can't say I haven't been guilty of it. I try to keep my comments neutral or comical. But it is hard to remain civil towards users who respond with hateful comments themselves. And if I have offended anyone I sincerely apologize.
Ignorance can lead to evil. In general.
So can genius.
Knowledge itself is not an indicator of the quality of a person's heart.
I agree with that completely. Very true. I'll take a good heart over a good brain any day. Having both is a bonus or a plus.
As difficult as it is, it can help to think of anger as a secondary emotion. People usually feel hurt and it comes out as anger/meanness/rudeness. Most likely they took someone's comment as an attack and are now defensive. It's a downward spiral.
Anger that's all!
I've been pissed off by people and their sheer stupidity.
I'm sorry ☺
Generally it's just those so thick headed that they can't see any other point of view.
Damn Jim.. I'm right, you're wrong. Get the hell over it ;)
I have... Once. It was a week or two ago when that jerk was speaking poorly of you. Anyone who thinks they're tough behind their phone/tablet/computer and thinks it's alright to upset others - grow up. There are so many people on here, who I
genuinely care about. If you get someone to the point of tears... You should be ashamed of yourself. This is a community of, in general, great people... Treat everyone with respect and act like adults.
Well said Mr L
Tears? Damn, that must have been baaaaaaaaaad. Like, ban you from SOH bad.
Thanks, Kenny. It makes me sick. Most of us are friends, or close to that and the complete and utter disrespect is horrendous. If someone cries, as pipes stated, you need to reevaluate your life.
I see no reason for such strong words on here. And thankfully I haven't experienced any of it.
So many people just don't respect others. It's as simple as that. I mean, I have never acted harshly towards anyone except when they were verbally assaulting another user. I don't care who you are, if you mess with my SoH family, you're done.
I second Kenny. Very well said, MrL. You've got a way with words.
As I said. I may just be the people I talk with but I just don't see it happening. I guess all the evil people are only on the public polls. Cuz they obviously don't have major accounts that they talk to people on. Like you and I.
I've seen it quite prevalently in other polls, unfortunately. It's disheartening at times to see such foolishness!
Not on here, but in one of my classes a kid made a very ignorant comment during a debate and I yelled at him. I was really ashamed of myself...
Lol no not really
You get enough anger watching the cubbies lose! Am I right?!
Angry.. Hell yeah!
Yes. I can get pretty angry at some people's attitudes that are callous & uncaring, especially if their comments are laced with nasty mean things. I don't get too angry when those are directed at me, for some reason. I've gotten furious *once* at...
..an exchange where the words *were* directed at me, when I was saying logical things & the other person kept saying untrue nasty things about me. I found the "ignore" button.
What really gets to me, bad, is when people I think of as friends...
...say things of the same nature. I'm not talking about political differences but something more fundamental. Then I cry.
Directed at you in the sense they were attacking you on your opposing views on a topic? That's just rude and frankly childish.
Susan if it's ever me doing that it's unintentional and I hope you'll tell me to knock it off long before you get anywhere close to wanting to cry. Or even feel disappointed.
He seemed to be having a different conversation almost entirely. It was a poll that involved Reagan; I mentioned that if he had handled the public health situation differently the AIDS epidemic probably wouldn't have been as extensive. I got told...
..I was a libtard and a baby-killer (by association, since all Democrats are in favor of abortion. It just got worse & worse. Apparently I wasn't allowed to say anything bad about a Republican.
Well, pipes, it *was* a user who is somewhat known for rudeness. I should not have been surprised. It was just that no matter how I tried to explain it, I got less than nowhere.
Oh ya. Same here. But I don't get too mad. Only when they call me childish, or insult me personally. It's happened. I've been called masshole, and something insulting my age/education level, I forget exactly. Those reps can be crazy at times.
Zod - it's NEVER, EVER you. EVER. But I know I could talk to you, easily, if it ever seemed like there was that kind of problem. With a couple people, that's just not possible.
Well the good news, Susan, is that everyone on here that knows you would never believe those things of you. But, it is hard when you feel put down.
Susan - and this was someone you considered to be a friend?
Sure, pipes, there are lots of things that get me annoyed, upset, or angry. Mostly I can deal with it quite well. Just that one time, for some reason, it blew past all my sensibility & defenses, & totally pissed me off.
Pipes, masshole was pretty mean! I hate that kind of putdown.
Not the time I got really pissed off, EB. Not anything resembling a friend. (If it's a friend, I cry.) Everyone's favorite crank. I'm not sure why that one exchange bothered me so much; it just did.
(Hugs) for Susan.
Kay, ehh, ya, I guess. It was uncalled for considering I never said anything like that. I NEVER be rude on SOH, unless I'm just joking. For a teen on SOH, it's as if I'm more mature than some of the adults, when it comes to debating.
Pipes, I have noticed that.
Thanks, jimi! Can I come collect that the next time I'm having a bad time?
kay - thanks for the kind words!
Yeah I think I saw you getting fairly annoyed in a poll recently. Basically you can't reason with unreasonable people. Overall though I would rate you in the top 5 commenters on SoH.
It was a user (who shall remain nameless) talking about welfare. I couldn't take it anymore. I nearly broke my phone, but that would have only hurt me. So I I just had to walk away from it.
You remembered their name? Wow.
Yes, I have a good memory. Especially for things like that.
I'm glad I haven't. I haven't come across anything too rude or offensive or anything.
Well we could start here rlands. I'll be happy to make your first SOH cry session.
Rlands.. You must have selective eye sight.
You can try pipes. Maybe Evgeni is right. I guess it takes a lot to offend me.
Evgeni would be an awesome name. Thank you rlands auto cucumber.
Sure! It's because I talk about hockey players so much. Kuznetsov, Malkin...
Sorry y'all.. Staying as evseng2
I'm not really a crier but definitely visibly angry. (Usually the gay marriage debate or the "atheists 'believe' too" claim.)
What? What's the athiests believe too? I want to know what I believe.
People who assert that atheism is just another religion. That our philosophy about the lack of existence of gods is just as much of a "belief" as theism.
That's frustrating to me as well, Jen.
Soooooo are you saying it is or isn't atheism a belief. I think technically it is,
Jenn, I'm a Christian and even I know whoever says that (what your example is) is an idiot.
High five ev.
So is it or is it not a belief?
Atheism is a lack of belief.... It is the absence of belief.
What about anarchy? Is that a form of government? I think it goes by the same principle.
Exactly rlands. That's a great analogy. Are you athiest rlands? If you don't mind me asking, I think weve had a heated god debate in one of my polls but I forgot.
Nope I'm not. And I don't mean to offend anyone at all, just totally curious as to how it should be classified.
Atheism and theism have the same "relationship" as asexual and sexual plants. Asexual plants do not require another plant to reproduce, whereas sexual plants do. Theists have beliefs about God and atheists do not have those beliefs. Theism ...
...is (a collection of) religions. Atheism is not religion.
True anarchy isn't a form of government. It's a lack of government. It's the default lack thereof, just as atheism is to religion. We debate anarchy as a system because it is more convenient to do so semantically.
jeninerd I've been in that loop more than once, and the abridged online dictionaries people use as gospel don't help. I'm looking for a word that means the same thing, like "just-not-a-believer", but they always come back with "agnostic". AARRRGH!
Exactly Zod. The best way I can describe it is thus: Atheism is a lack of belief about religion. Agnosticism goes one tick in the direction of theism by accepting that religion may or may not be true. Theism accepts that it is true.
I think that's close, but gnostic and agnostic address the strength of the belief or lack thereof. So you can be a gnostic theist or atheist, or an agnostic theist or atheist.
The bottom line for me is that the absence of belief is not the same as the presence of a negative belief. Not believing in a God is not the same as believing there is no God. Atheist is not a belief at all, it is the absence of belief.
Well I don't know who you all were trying to explain this to before, but it makes sense to me. Admittedly, I haven't heard the other side of the argument, but your logic would be hard to beat!
Jen, I think when some call atheism a belief, they mean belief as a difference then fact, if you're saying that you know for a fact that God does not exist, than that might also offend those with opposing beliefs.
As I've commented before, it was definitely a Theist who wrote the dictionary definition of Atheist.
The one I like is, Atheism is a religion like Abstinence is a sexual position.
Fredd I hadn't heard that one before, but I really like it and will be using it if only I can remember it when the time comes. Direct, visual, and dead-on accurate.
I usually say "I don't believe in gods," not "I believe in not gods."
Lol, ok, I wasn't trying to argue whether it is or not a belief, I would be interested in polling it maybe, but was trying to say, the way I viewed it was in no way intended to offend, I don't think we'll be able to sway each other's position, but
I am truly sorry it upsets you. No hard feelings
Quit with the question marks!
Not my fault the emoji aren't working. My life depends on emoji so I HAVE to use them.
You are hilarious!
Anyway, I gotten so upset from arguments on this app that I've deleted the app several times and walked away. I've kept coming back because there is a group of people whom I love and enjoy interacting with. I've also laughed more then I've gotten mad
❤ You EB.
Morelove: I share your feelings on the emojis..
I am also thankful that you keep coming back. You're a great asset to the SoH community and very cool guy.
Thank you sir.
When atheists use the term "Sky daddy".
Rofl! What!??! I've never heard that before. Lol.
Or "Giant invisible man in the sky".
Well that's better. And more accurate, in my opinion. Sky daddy is just weird.
Yeah, that's absurd. There's no need to include "giant." No where in scripture is there a reference to the invisible sky daddy being giant.
More - are you still trying to use emojis? All we are seeing is question marks.
I believe the emojis are 4 ? Not 3.
So is he typing in question marks?
I feel like it won't affect me now that I've made this public :D
???? that was one.
Some people are just so ignorant it makes me cry.
That sums it up great.
Several topics that affect me personally get me emotionally involved and then when someone makes states to me personally or that are particularly vicious generally it does upset me.
Makes statements... Not states
No, I have been frustrated a few times and sad a few times by some comments that were made though.
Oh wait. There was one person who was putting down my husband for being out of work. That was very upsetting to me.
Like BKS. I just blow it off or go to another poll long before I get that wound up, but when I see really nasty and uncalled-for comments directed at friends I know to be gentle and kind I go right into overload. Somebody being mean to you inge?
No. That wouldnt bother if someone was mean. It is just polls on a certain topic where some comments baffle me so much that it takes me to a bad place.
Like there are really people in this world that believe that kind of thing.
It's shocking to me sometimes what people seem to believe.
Like Ron White says, you can't fix stupid.
I just really wish we could - but that's the teacher in me perhaps.
I threw my phone once.
I'm a baby but yes, I have cried before.
*hugs* me too.
That makes me feel really bad Inge. You have so much support around here. You are loved by many.
Inge, you really are one of the most beloved and adored SoH users. You're so exceedingly friendly and a genuinely great person - as far as I can tell. You're fun and intelligent, with sweet and fiery sides. That's frustrating for me to hear. ):
Not a debate involving myself. Two of my friends on here have had their feelings hurt in the past week and that pisses me off.
I hear ya
Bks - I'm sorry to hear that. I've had my feelings hurt before but not recently.
Earlybird, there should be no reason, ever, for anyone to think its ok to hurt your feelings here. Your one of the nicest people I've met here.
Wow Kenny, that was so unexpected and felt so nice! Thank you! ❤
Your very welcome earlybird :)
