Franco, dictator of Spain, was the only major leader during WWII times who came out unscathed (Mussolini, Hitler, Stalin didn't see the 1960s). Franco stayed neutral (technically) and continued to lead Spain until his death 1975. Your view of Franco?

Winston Churchill died in 1965 & Stalin probably died of natural causes.

He was a dictator which makes him a bad person by default. He wasn't as "successful" at being a dictator as the other candidates you mention but that's a high standard. He was still a bad leader and I'm glad they were able to convert to a democracy.

Cara al sol con la camisa nueva
que tú bordaste en rojo ayer,
me hallará la muerte si me lleva
y no te vuelvo a ver.

Formaré junto a mis compañeros
que hacen guardia sobre los luceros,
impasible el ademán,
y están presentes en nuestro afán.

Viva Franco Caudillo de España!

You sort of inspired the question by mentioning Franco in another thread about Mussolini and dictatorship.

Anecdotal but I visited Alicante in 1973 when Franco still ruled.

I never had the impression to be oppressed.
Spain seemed to be a free country.

Visiting a country is NOT the same as living in it. I visited cancun, Mexico therefore seems pretty rich.

When you listen to the accounts of the Spanish people actually LIVING there, you get a very different sense

Maybe, but even the one visit to Ceausescu's Romania 1977 showed me something.
The plane was an aged Turboprop, the hotel food crappy, children trying to exchange leis for marks, vendors selling cola only when bribed. This country suffered.

The people didn't revolt. I think he listened to a good amount of them. Idk of him entirely though.
