Do you think the US would have been better off if they had not intervened in the Middle East starting 1991. This means no first and second gulf war and no war in Afghanistan.
We'd have been better off not getting involved in the first place with Iran-Contra...give the Iraqis our weapons so they can use them against us later...brilliant move, Reagan :p.
This part of the world has not been a friend of the US well before 1991. 52 American diplomats and citizens were held hostage for 444 days (November 4, 1979, to January 20, 1981) after a group of Iranian students belonging to the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam's Line, who supported the Iranian Revolution, took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.
In 1991 the United States only liberated Kuwait because of the invasion of Saddam Hussein's Iraq in February of that year. After we pushed the Iraqis out of Kuwait and all the way to Bagdad we then left.
The hard liners, Al-Qaeda, were going to make attacks on us no matter what. The 1993 World Trade Center bombing was a terrorist attack on our soil, New York City. Al-Qaedas, Ramzi Yousef along with others stated that the attack on the World Trade Center would be merely the first of such attacks if his demands were not met.
Al-Qaeda attacked several sites of ours including embassies, military Barracks, ships etc. etc. over several years, unprovoked.
Yes we needed to take a stand. That stand needed to be there to keep them from doing more here, but over the past hand full of years now they are here and will attack whenever and wherever they can. Political correctness be damned. We need to stop the influx of the people that wants to kill us!!! NOW
Yes, but go back to 1979 with the first American intervention in Afghanistan.
Or our support of the Shah in Iran, same period.
Given your admittedly sharp intellect and solid education, I would have expected a more verbose answer 😏
Western intervention in the Middle East goes back to the Ottoman Empire. It's been a mixed basket; intervening powers have certainly made terrible mistakes in the region. But we have also done good. So it really depends on when you decide to start the record.
From 1991, I would say that our role has been mostly positive. We liberated Kuwait in the first Gulf War, which was absolutely the correct decision. I believe the work of the Bush administration in Afghanistan and Iraq have ultimately set both countries on a path towards a better future. Although there are certainly still struggles that must be dealt with, there are now functional, legitimate governments in place. Outside of wars, we have served as a diplomatic mediator and a necessary power broker in the Middle East.
I love that this app has so many intelligent people.
just dislike the justification for getting into these wars, like Kuwait for example. Instead of being transparent in what we were doing, we had to use flase testimony to get public support to intervene.
You do realize democrats voted for this shit too right? Hillary is one of the biggest war Hawks in Washington
And you realize Jimmy Carter armed terrorists in Afghanistan? Of course Reagan finished the job, but it was started by a Democrat. Bullshit knows no partisan bounds.
Damned if you do, damned if you don't
Yes, we'd be better off
I mean, if we didn't intervene Opec would have converted to the Euro under Hussein which would have devastated the USD.
Well they were intervening in the Middle East since the 70s, but I believe economically the U.S. wouldn't be a global power if we didn't intervene.
Interventionism in the Middle East has done nothing more but create more hostility and hatred toward the Middle East . They don't hate us for our freedom in itself they hate us for the actions we take with that freedom the rampant imperliastic actions we have taken.
Yes. The USSR was on its last limbs as it was. Afganistan was just a last desperate attempt to stabilize the government by using oil revenue.
I like historical speculation but here, it is a big bunch of maybes.
Maybe 9/11 wouldn't have happened.
Maybe ISIS wouldn't have happened.
Need more input which all those smart (no irony) SoH people might provide 😏
I can tell you that I don't think 9/11 could have happened without American intervention in Afghanistan in the 80s. Essentially we armed rebels which became the Taliban and took over the country. They created a safe place for bin Laden. Furthermore, one of the stated reasons by bin Laden was an American presence in the region. If we weren't there, then he loses half of his justification to do 9/11.
