Do you have fireflies where you live?
I live near one of the two places in the world where they glow at the same time for a few weeks a year! It's crazy!
I think it is too dry here.
I use to smear them on the sidewalks and watch the sidewalks glow
Interesting map art
You mean lightning bugs??
My cats just discovered them!
Fewer than we used to.. But still around.
I've seen them in Dallas.
I have never seen a firefly.
:O!!! This is where I wish I could use an emoticon...
You have been deprived!
I love honest tea!
Me too! It's the best :):):)
I love fireflies!
Grew up with them, but alas, they're no more. I am curious if their disappearance is somehow similar in cause for honeybee decline.
There's a short piece on the website www.firefly.org that says it's due to development & human traffic, & light pollution. So not the same honeybees, I guess. But sad. And frankly a little scary.
Makes me sad we dont have them and my kids did not get to enjoy them like I did as a kid in Oklahoma and Missouri.
I think so. I don't see them regularly, but I have before.
We do, be we call them lightning bugs. :)
Lightning bugs :) yep we call them that sometimes too!
We do! :-D
I wish we had them. I've only seen them once when I was visiting family in Iowa as a kid.
Haven't seen them since I left Jersey.
Heavy population this year with all the rain. Great gift time show!
Not here; it's too dry. I grew up with them, though, & was glad to have them around when I lived in Ohio again until recently.
Looks like it's a very eastern thing... Sorry west coast! No fireflies for you :)
I am from Oregon and I had never seen a firefly until I moved to Nebraska
There's a web site (www.firefly.org) that says fireflies like warm & humid areas, but almost no species are found west of Kansas
Yes, but there doesn't seem to be as many this summer.
We've had so many this summer! I want to say more than usual, but we always have a lot.
We have quite a lot at our house this year. Strange, since you (Kay) and I aren't all that far apart, geographically. The kids frequently go out just before bed to chase them around the yard.
That's unfortunate :( they're great!
Oh please no worries! I'm glad someone posted it!
I was going ask this! Great Question! We get them in wooded areas if the humidity is low; so rarely.
Haha sorry I stole your question :)
And that's interesting; I didn't know it had to do with humidity, I figured temperature. Cool!
Good question! I didn't realize that they weren't indigenous to the entire continental US until we moved to NE WI. They don't have them there. Now we're back in IL again, and the kids love chasing them in the evenings.
I just assumed they were almost everywhere until we had guests from Cali that were amazed by them!
Yes. And my dog likes to eat the poor things
They're a healthy part of any dog's diet!
Haha poor fireflies :) oh well, your dog can have some...there'll still be plenty left
I don't think it's because they are "tasty". Just because she thinks its a fun game to try and catch them
Yeah I can't imagine they would taste good...
To us no. But there's a lot of things my dog thinks is tasty that I would never put in my mouth...
Haha agreed! My dog eats spiders on occasion. And I'm just like "wtf dog..."
We have TONS of them and they're so incredible. They make it look like the trees have Christmas lights on them :)
Rlands like shiny. ;P
Yeah, it's the same where I live. (:
I voted no, I've not seen them here, but maybe I should open my eyes.
Tom- I don't know if you have them in DE...I'm trying to remember if I've seen them at the beaches or not.
