There's a short piece on the website www.firefly.org that says it's due to development & human traffic, & light pollution. So not the same honeybees, I guess. But sad. And frankly a little scary.
We have quite a lot at our house this year. Strange, since you (Kay) and I aren't all that far apart, geographically. The kids frequently go out just before bed to chase them around the yard.
Good question! I didn't realize that they weren't indigenous to the entire continental US until we moved to NE WI. They don't have them there. Now we're back in IL again, and the kids love chasing them in the evenings.
