Inspired by Cole12: which party is more fiscally responsible when it comes to handling national budget and debt?

The republicans have the best fiscal policy but it isn't conservative enough but they have the worst foreign policy, social policy, and civil liberties. Also they are complete hypocrites they say they are the small government party but advocate for increasing military budget, reinstalling the patriot act and the nominee is pro-fly No buy list

I would say Republicans because of their commitment to shrinking government. Admittedly, recent Republican presidents haven't been so good at balancing the budget, but that's because they had the threat of the Cold War and the War on Terror to defend against.

Conservative fiscal "responsibility" is a myth.

Three of the four highest debtors in history or Republican presidents (Obama gets a pass because he was taking out of the hole in one of the others had left him). Add to that the number of red states taking federal dollars AND keeping people on welfare, and it's pretty clear.

I agree republicans are not fiscally responsible but I always have to laugh at the welfare state argument. Liberals are unintentionally making the argument that the more black people the state has, the more it takes in government aid. Which is technically true, but it's funny because they probably like to think it's the white Christian republicans on welfare to fit their narrative

The reason I narrowly voted Republicans is that I think people with serious money are more likely to be Republican, and being wealthy and keeping it should require expertise on fiscal issues.

Looking at historical performance since WWII, it is not even a close call on budget deficits or national debt.

Federally? Neither we'd likely be in a similar spot if McCain had won.

State wide - GOP does much better. Hogan in Maryland is my fav.

If you look at recent history, democrats have done far better with the deficit than republicans have

You...you don't know how the deficit works do you? Obama cut the rate of increase in the deficit (which is the rate at which our debt increases) which means if debt is $100 and increased by $10 and that rate increases by $1 every year Obama cut that by $.1 neither has been good on the deficit, it ballooned under Obama as it has under every recent president. His cuts are relative to his own term.

I know how it works. And no, the deficit was highest at the very beginning of obamas presidency but it has been shrinking ever since. It's not a problem that goes away overnight

You do know you said no then proved my point? It was highest under the yearly Obama years, because the first budget caused it to swell up. Then it has gone down numberically, Bush last budget had it raise to -3% GDP to Debt, Obama's first more than tripled it to -10%

I know it's confusing. It's the first and second derivatives of the debt. Hope you did well in calculus!

Let's look at the deficit under presidential ad ministrations. Obama has reduced it year after year. Bush made a huge one. Clinton eliminated it.

That is nonsense. The deficit under Obama has been much higher every year. But you have to understand that the purse is controlled by the Congress. Look at what happened when Democrats took control of the House. And then look at what happened when Republicans won the majority again. Do your research and then you can make an intelligent comment.

Difficult to say. They blame each other for the national debt and unbalanced budget, so who's right?
Republicans should be slightly more economically competent, but that may be a stereotype. You tell me.
