My history teacher tried to promote the idea of America being a 'mixed salad' as opposed to being a 'melting pot'. Which do you believe America should strive to be more like?

Mixed salad. I would rather have people similar to me then different. A melting pot just creates to much racial tensions.

To me it's the opposite too many cultures not becoming homogenous is what causes tension. You need a common American identity to unite diverse groups.

True, like Rome. Romans were so different all over the empire but they were united by a common Roman identity.

I used to think that but having visited Canada recently, I realized it's not at all true. America sports the Americanized version of many different cultures. In Canada you get a lot more authentic versions of those cultures. I personally like that a lot more.

Your teacher is correct in identifying the problem

America doesn't work if it isn't a melting pot.

Can't we all just be people? why does it have to be black people and white people and asian people? When we stop talking about a person's skin color, we will be equal.

Well it'd be naive to believe that cultural differences that aren't sorted out wouldn't cause racial or cultural tension. We need a more homogenous American culture.
