If at some point in the near future genetic editing would be employed to create novelty pets that glow in the dark or combine traits of different animals, basically custom pets, then, provided the animals don't suffer, would it bother you?

No. I am 100% against messing with genes.

I mean Yes, it would bother me. Skimmed the question, my bad.

well knowing the human race, some dickhead is gonna invent a fire breathing dragon type shit and kill people

Why would a new option on the market bother anyone? You don't have to buy one.

Because these are living animals and there is an abundance of them already in shelters.

I just thought some might be creepy. I don't think it should be illegal though.

Kitty, what does that have to do with anything?

singkitty In the cloud

There are animals waiting for forever homes. Why add to the animal population when we are filling up our shelters with them?

But what does have to do with the poll or even the general topic?

Should car manufacturers stop coming out with newer models and new innovations because there is plenty of inventory in dealer lots already?

you can't compare cars to living creatures.

It's the same logic.
"Because X product already exists in adequate supply to meet existing demand, new similar products should my be created."

We aren't talking about products. This isn't about things, it's about living creatures.

Did you read the poll? It refers to pets, or animals. Do you think the two are mutually exclusive or something?

I'm not sure what you're asking. I think living creatures and pets are pretty mutually exclusive if that's what you're getting at.

Liberty 4,032,064
08/10/16 6:38 am

Ok, that's where the problem is. Why do you think that living creatures can't be pets?

singkitty In the cloud
08/10/16 6:39 am

I never said they couldn't.

Liberty 4,032,064

You just said that you though pets and living creatures are mutually exclusive. Do you no longer believe that?

singkitty In the cloud
08/10/16 10:39 am

I'm so sorry I mistyped that to a real point of confusion. I meant to say the two ARE NOT mutually exclusive. A cat or dog qualifies as a living creature/pet. Man I shouldn't be allowed on SOH before I drink coffee. Sorry!

Yes it would bother me. We have enough animals in need of adopting...we don't need to add more.

lendluke iowa

Wouldn't the new creatures just replace a portion of the old ones instead of adding to them?

Not unless all the strays magically were adopted prior to these new mutants.

I thought about doing this with fish sometime ago (make them glow in the dark). As it turns out, the laws governing this kind of thing are extensive.

I seriously doubt you'd get caught if you made your pet fish glow in the dark.

No, I wanted to sell them.

No, I'd apply the same ethic rules I'd like to see for ordinary breeding.
Don't create sickly breeds or breeds that have trouble leading a normal life.
