Well, darn. I hope you're as content with it as I am. I figured at 64 and still a postdoc, I wasn't going to be able to compete well with newly minted PhDs in biological research, so I decided it was just time to retire.

In my case, the issue was reduced federal funding of medical research. My boss, for the first time ever, didn't get a couple of major grants renewed, and he had to cut back.

I failed an exam and they retired me. Was 40. Far from happy about it and am making it my business to one day get back, and retire on my own terms.
