Solitary confinement can cause hallucinations, panic, cognitive deficits, obsessive thinking, paranoia and a long list of others. Estimates are 100,000 in solitary at a cost of $75,000 per year. 1/3 are mentally ill. Total $7.5 billion a year

I'll take solitary over the death penalty every day. It may not be the best and it can obviously have some kinks worked out, but I'm 100% against the death penalty.

I think there are legit uses. Safety of inmate or others is one. Not punishment.

I feel that solitary is used as a punishment only because corporal punishment is illegal in prisons.

It may be more humane to whip someone than put them in solitary.

I don't know which would be best, but the whipping is probably cheaper.
