Can you ever be wrong on what kind of person you identify yourself as?
Yes. Bernie Sanders identifies as a socialist. He's wrong.
He identifies as a democratic socialist. He's not wrong. A democratic socialist is to socialist as ham is to hamster. Most of us here are democratic socialists, and that's a good thing:
A democratic socialist is one who supports a democratic transition to socialism (rather than a revolution). Socialism is worker ownership of production. Sanders is a social democrat.
It is only a subset of democratic socialism that strives to establish socialism or collective ownership of the means of production. There is a lot of overlap, and most social democrats fit fully within the broader umbrella of democratic socialism. I'm confident Sanders would be fine with being categorized as either, as would I.
Sure. Happens with self-proclaimed "patriots" all the time.
I grew up thinking I was a liberal who hated war and was kind of contemptuous toward military members. Today I'm a conservative writer and activist and a military spouse with a military son and an Afghan war hero brother.
All without changing most of the core values I held.
Oh yes, you can be very, very wrong.
