Beth has a basketball-sized tumor on her stomach, making her appear 8 mo pregnant. At the bar, the bartender refuses to serve her. She is filing a discrimination suit. The bartender argues she never said she wasn't pregnant. Pick a side.
Err on the side of caution.
did you get this from nurse Jackie?
In a way, this was supposed to play off the pregnant gal tossing back shots to see if there was a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kinda thing. The character was inspired by Rosie's "twins"
Don't they have signs saying "we have the right to refuse service to anyone"?
That's about as legal as a disclaimer on Facebook that you retain the copywrite on your posts.
I'm not sure a bartender can refuse service to a pregnant woman. Is drinking while pregnant considered child abuse? If so I think they could refuse service.
Drinking a little while pregnant is sometimes recommended by doctors to help pregnant women sleep. Drinking a lot while pregnant leads to fetal alcohol syndrome and is a bad thing. The line between too much and too little is not well understood and not studied for ethical reasons.
Women who are nursing are sometimes recommended to have a beer because the yeast helps milk production, but again too much is bad and the gap in between is not well understood.
I didn't know that about yeast! That's interesting.
This is America. How can the country tell us if we can discriminate or not?
"We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone"
Just because an establishment posts this doesn't really make it true.
Should be true
I would have had a conversation with her and say, that alcohol could hurt her baby and I would offer her a free non alcoholic drink. Then maybe she would volunteer the fact that she's not prego and it's a tumor and she could really use a double.
And she won't tip you.
What an asshat. There is nothing that should ever allow a sanctimonious turd nugget to discriminate against a woman because she is a woman, because she is pregnant, or because she has a medical condition. And it is certainly no one's business, especially not a bartender's, whether or not she is pregnant. If she was already faced and the bartender refused to serve her, fine, otherwise I hope she winds up owning the bar after winning her well-justified lawsuit.
Well justified?! All she had to do was claim she wasn't pregnant!
Whether or not she is or is not pregnant is no one else's business, and in any case, being pregnant is not an invitation to be discriminated against, whether or not this occurred in one of the backwards states that does not already offer legal protection from such nonsense in public accommodations. In some states such dikish behavior may still be legal, but it certainly isn't ever right.
Are you serious?! Alcohol on a developing fetus is extremely dangerous. It is ridiculous that you think you can force a bartender to provide a toxin to infants. It is a bartenders job to not allow people to drink who they think shouldn't have more... That includes pregnant women.
That wouldn't be the case even if she were pregnant, unless she was already drunk; there is no infant involved in this scenario and wouldn't be even if she had been pregnant, which she wasn't (not that it makes a bit of difference).
Zod if you think serving someone 8mo pregnant with alcohol is OK, I think you need to "catch up with modern society" as you always advocate for
I do think it is fine for most pregnant women to have an occasional drink, and so do most doctors. The *recommendation* to avoid alcohol during pregnancy made by some doctors (but certainly not all) is just that, a recommendation, because in the modern world we recognize the choice is hers and hers alone. It isn't up to anyone to dikishly enforce a "rule" that isn't even a rule. She isn't a second class citizen because she is a woman, or because she is pregnant (which she wasn't even, in the example). No one needs to agree with her choices, but everyone needs to recognize they are hers and hers alone to make. Same as anyone else.
You sound like an ignoramus arguing the strawman that it somehow makes women second class citizens. Go tell a pregnant woman to start guzzling alcohol, since it's no danger
Feel free to re-read anything I've written here, and the linked article, or not. Maybe you'll figure it out with multiple attempts, or not. You are of course free to choose dogma and ignorance over data and common sense, and if history is a guide, probably will. But you don't get to choose for other competent adults who have the right to make their own choices. Ever.
Totally the bartender. I did have a beach ball tumor removed at one time
Oooo tough call.
I think Beth had a basketball-sized tumor in her head too
Assuming the bar tender isn't violating the wishes of the bar's owner, he should be able to discriminate on any basis he chooses. Personally I would be hesitant to serve alcohol to someone with a booger on their forehead simply because they'd stick around long enough to drink it.
Somehow serving bar one of the last things I can see you doing. Unless less it was a soda fountain.
Bartender doesn't have to serve anyone.
Beth should know better. Heroin, not alcohol, is the way to get rid of stomach tumors.
Beth needs a doctor, not a drink. I have a baseball sized cyst in my abdomen and it's a fair health concern (and may require surgery). You'd think a baseball would be emergency surgery level.
Either way though, bartender.
so sorry! prayers that everything will be ok! why haven't they operated yet??
It's not causing damage in and of itself, so they want to wait and see if it'll go away on its own.
that's nerve wracking ...hoping you get peace of mind soon!
Me too ha!
I told her not to eat watermelon pits!
The bar can refuse service to anyone for any reason.
And she may want to get that tumor checked out.
Beth needs to get a clue.
This user is currently being ignored
Beth needs to find another bar.
