Our nation is filled with people who claim to be very patriotic and profess a love for their country while at the same time expressing a derision and loathing of their federal government. Are these two positions consistent or are they contradictory?

I am loyal to the Constitution. The government isn't. Case closed.

That's why I'm specific regarding what I love and hate about the US. Unfortunately, I'm not patriotic at all regarding the government. It's not my fault they're evil psychopaths.

Loathing is to strong. I would agree with mistrust.

The United States is a country for the people. The gov are here to serve us. If they step out of line yeah we are gonna criticize them.

I agree that the government is here to serve us and yet they aren't and we still continue to elect and reelect these same people. In the end the blame is on us. If we hate our government, we actually hate ourselves.

Consistent. You can love your country but not care for your gov. This is why people rebel.

There is a point where those things are entirely consistent, but past that point they separate and sometimes rather sharply

Many of the founding fathers and presidents including Lincoln often used the quote, (or some variation of it):

People get the government they deserve.

And:

In a democracy, we get the leaders we deserve.

Problem is, money. Big money interests control our government.

I agree with both of you on these points but I guess what I am trying to get at is what is it that people love about our country if they hate our government?

I'm not a fan of the government and neutral to the country, so I can't answer for you.

The government isn't our country. The government is partisan and power that's usually corrupt.

America was founded on the grounds of small govt. You can love the country for what it stands for and however you interpret it's messages but you can disagree with the way your govt is run.

We live in a Representative Republic. If you hate the government the people elected, then you hate the people that elected that government. If you hate the people of your country, you hate your country.

Just cus we elect the guy/gal who represents the party we stand with doesn't mean we agree with them on everything. Power corrupts, and it's the electoral college who picks the big man, not us.

I don't like the person I elected, I vote them out. But one vote doesn't work. And New York likes career politicians

The US was built around the people, so when the government continuously expands into our personal lives, it's patriotic to dislike it.

If I didn't love my nation, I wouldn't care about what the government is doing

It's very consistent, because it's discouraging to see the direction the government is taking the nation, and the way they conduct their business.
