Should we (probably eventually) build a space elevator?
It should be one of our top priorities eventually. A space elevator would make space travel vastly cheaper and easier.
If we can find the material to make the tether, then yes.
Halo fans know that's a bad idea
I agree with this strongly.
Can somebody explain what happened in Halo? If the tether gets whipped around the equator, shouldn't that cause only little damage?
Let's just say it was a great target that ended by literally lying across the Sahara Desert
Something like this: youtu.be/moOykmDIFsE
If built properly it would a) be tethered to a platform at sea, not a land based facility, and b) balanced so that if severed in the lower few miles, would not fall to Earth.
Given that it would extend into geostationary orbit, when severed at ground level, it would whip around its midsection and settle into an orbit 18,000 miles above Earth. Since there is little atmospheric drag that far up, it would float indefinitely.
Once we have the materials and technology, I'd love to build one. What worries me is the human propensity to fucking ruin something that would be amazing if left alone. One ambitious terrorist could turn the tether into a 36,000 km fucking whip that will wrap around the equator.
We shouldn't let terrorists dictate what we build. Should we stop building skyscrapers because terrorists can fly planes into them?
Lost at the post above, see what happened in Halo.
Obviously not Praet. It worries me, but it is not going to keep me from supporting it.
