I feel like an idiot now. I just realized the up vote function is actually a share poll button. Whoops sorry. I just thought it was like a you liked this poll button. Sorry!

They are not the same thing. When you upvote it doesn't share it (at least on Android and iOS, I'm not sure about the web version).

On an iPhone, you get the share button by pressing the 3 dots. Then, you get a menu, including share and other stuff.

Android and I kept looking for it because I'd seen the functionality of the share poll but never seen how to actually use it. Thanks for all the info on this. And OldPoop you made what was a really shitty 24 hour day a lot better!

Yep, Kay & GA are correct. If you just push an up-arrow (I'm not sure what it looks like on Android, but on iOS there are up and down arrows with a number in between), you've only up-rated the poll. You have to tap the 3 dots, get a popup menu, and tap "Share with followers" to actually share.
