Are most mental illnesses socially constructed?
No, how'd they do that ?
All mental illnesses are socially constructed. They come into existence when we observe people displaying maladaptive behaviors and look for patterns. If enough people display the same pattern of maladaptive behaviors, then it gets labeled a mental illness.
Unless it's social anxiety or depression brought on by bullying or stalking - then No!
Many have a genetic component which makes a person more prone to becoming ill if the environmental pressures are present.
I don't think so but it would definitely appear that some are/were. Schizophrenia is clearly not a social construct but some that have been on that list definitely are, like being homosexual. It's been removed but it was considered insane for a long time and probably also received more attention than actual diseases because society didn't see it as morally acceptable. Now most do, now it's not insane, so it's hard to argue it wasn't a social construct.
Idk what that would even entail...there are like physical symptoms and the ways you perceive your illness are very real...
I find it hard to imagine how they could be argued as social constructs.
