IN 2016 women in the US Navy will begin wearing the same iconic white 'Dixie cup' hat that male sailors wear. Good or bad move by the Navy?

The silliest looking hat in the military.

I came here to say the same thing. Those hats are silly. It's good for everyone to have the same hat, but does it have to be that hat?

Great move that in a small way with no downside helps highlight that everyone who wears the uniform, of in this case the iconic hat, is as much a part of the team as any other. The tailoring may need to be different, but to the extent they can the uniforms for men and women should be the same, head to toe. The hat is a good start.

Never cared for that cover but it might be better than a beret...or the blue C cap...although easy to put in a pocket.
Caps, hats, covers, whatever you call them must be difficult to choose, most look silly or very dated.

Besides the fact that those hats are ridiculous? I'm fine with it.

They may seem ridiculous but I liked them for several reasons. 1...they are distinctive...nobody would confuse a sailor in a white hat with any other service. 2..they were cheap and easy to maintain. I only paid a couple bucks for one and I threw them in the wash with my underwear. 3. They were easy to fold and store at sea where you have limited space. Plus, since you aren't supposed to wear hats indoors in the USN, they are easily folded and stuffed into a pocket. 4....They can be manipulated and worn in a way that gives them a unique 'personality.' I could always spot my white hat in a group. Finally....the USN claims them as functional....saying you could use them to bail water, although I never had to use them for that.

You can see my icon photo of me from 50 years ago with my Dixie Cup.

And I can see in your photo that you folded your hat around its perimeter in the same way that I did. :-)

Always had to break them to get the new look out of them when first aquired.

Hey PO, my cover is basically yellow, how do I clean it?

@usnavyvet I would was a new one a few times then roll it and let it sit for a few weeks before wearing. @cdtlane I would wash in hot water with bleach. If still dirty/yellow just get a new one, they're cheap.

On board ship we used to tie a long line to our hats and drag them in the ships wake as the salt water would bleach them them washed them regular.
