It insisted that I turn left off of a bridge over a rapidly flowing river, and it has never apologized.

New highway ramps, old maps, kept me looping the same roads, in an unfamiliar area..

Only once. While I was standing in the front yard of my parents' house it said I was in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean traveling toward Africa at 800 mph! I don't think that is where my parents' front yard was.

That was a couple of weeks after September 11, 2001 and there had been another terrorist related event somewhere that afternoon. Evidently those who were in charge of it temporarily scrambled the civilian GPS signal just in case the terrorists were planning to use it.

A couple of months after that they did an update to Selective Availability that allowed them to apply it regionally.
