My argument for being a pessimist: As an optimist, you are positive everything will work out. There are two final emotions, disappointment & as expected.
As a pessimist, you're sure things will not work out well. There are also two final emotions, pleasantly surprised & as expected.
I would rather go through life pleasantly surprised a good amount of time than disappointed.

The default state of glasses in general is empty. That is how they are typically manufactured, transported, and stored. So if there is anything in a glass at all, it is an increase from empty. Halfway to the maximum fill line is half full.

I've always been rather pessimistic, skeptical, and critical. I guess that means seeing the glass half empty. I don't own a pair of rose-colored glasses either.
