Do you think Americans have more or less civil rights than we did 20 years ago?

We need a smaller government. Government is abusive when it's large and we loose rights.

Hold on, turbo. Women could vote in 1992. The federal government has grown in size and scope every year since then. Look around on the interwebs for a few minutes. You're gonna be shocked when you discover all the power grabs that OUR government has made in the past 20 years.

Getting stopped at the air port is not the same as women not being able to vote some of you are so paranoid, think about how far we have come as a whole more people can vote more are treated equally and the ones that aren't are fighting for equality. Even 10 years ago things were a lot different

Just look at your cell phone. If a diary or a journal is a "personal effect" under the 4th amendment, a cell phone obviously is too. But not according to our current laws.

The Feds have redefined war. It's now against a concept, not a country. And they have a new definition for the enemy, enemy combatant, that leaves them in a legal limbo. Obama codified nearly all of Bush's policy, and it applies to you and me.

So besides being patted down at an airport, you've had your rights violated how? BTW all the drone attacks, torture, and detentions have happened OUTSIDE the US. I'm not ignorant. Empirical research says that human rights violations increase by any given country during times of war.

Another thing about TSA... The culprits still make it thru the checkpoints. Alert passengers and crews have stopped recent attempts--the underwear bomber and the shoe bomber. TSA proved worthless in both of those cases.

StakaLee
06/13/12 6:54 am

@StNik Stop being so damn ignorant. The Patriot Act, drone assassinations, the crackdown on whistleblowers, TSA molestations at airports, indefinite detentions without charges or trials, NDAA... We clearly have less rights.

Does every poll really have to be about gays? Geez

Really? Less rights? Wake-up people. Stop being so damn pessimistic. Besides what the media tells you, what can't you do that you really want to do? Marry the same sex? Go to Massachusetts. Smoke weed? There's California. Those were things you couldn't do 20 years ago. Geez.

People complain the government takes all their rights and they complain the government doesn't help the people.

BadWolf The Library

The people complaining about airport security and whatnot. Would you honestly take away those simple safety precautions? A minor inconvenience to people so lives are saved. Even if it's one life.

Lol tgriff, I so agree that's sad, i think. I'm a dude and realize this, and think they have too much rights. Ughhh I have a bad cough! "cough" sexism "cough".

So tired of reading "sheeple" accusations on this app. Do you seriously think you are the only ones who came to your conclusions by an intelligent thought process? Because the masses don't agree with you they must be sheeple? How inappropriate and close-minded!

06/11/12 4:01 pm

AndrewV, heres how the topic was used... Our idiotic government created 911 as a ruse to, (listen because the next line will make the correlation for you) steal our rights and liberties.

Where was anyone discussing conspiracy theorists aside from yourself?

Lol

Lololol. How did the comments go from the question to idiotic 9/11 conspiracy theorists? Idiots. Anyway, To answer the question is tough, if you were to take a tally on gained/lost I don't know which would prevail but I certainly believe we've moved in the right direction.

20 years ago I wasn't frisked at airports, didn't have my communications intercepted, couldn't be killed without trial, couldn't be tortured for being a whistleblower, had the right of habeas corpus, searched due to race, or so many others. Not an opinion, we have many fewer rights now.

Less! If you're a White male- you're to blame for everything!
Obama had the chance of our generation to help- but instead of manning up when someone didn't like a policy of his- his supporters cried racism.
That hurt us more than the whole cival rights movement.
Thanks obama & those idiots...

That's a tough question. I believe we've lost some of our civil rights due to this "politically correct" mania. Heaven forbid anyone say their opinion that isn't pre-approved by everyone else!

Rules for individual responsibility. Get a highschool education, wait until age 21 & until married to have a baby. Those who violate those 3 rules have a 77% chance of living in poverty. All under the control of the individual.

it would appear that the current majority have been bamboozled. @winningdels, the "cool-aid" guzzlers wont understand until its too late... unfortunately.

Our "terrorists" reside in high ranking US positions.
They used 911 to dismantle our constitution.

Writ of Habeas Corpus... GONE.

Good luck to all.

06/11/12 7:59 am

Timeout one of the reasons 911 was orchestrated was to take more of our liberties away from us. Why was BinLaden (still hasnt been) never officially charged or indicted for 911?
We went to war (satisfying our military industrial leaders) under false pretense bc they rallied our support through lies

Per the New York Times, e mails show that the Obama White House secretly colluded with the major drug companies to pass Obamacare. This is the guy who said all would be transparent.

There will never ever be a society where every person is completely free and has the same total economic and civil freedoms as the next person.

@Timeout, you clearly prefer servant-hood in safety over the animating contest of liberty. Go away from us in peace. We ask not your council nor your arms. Crouch down and lick your master's hand, and may your chains set lightly upon you.

timeout to do nothing is to deny them the win. To deny each other any small part of life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness is to gift wrap the victory for them. It's worth a small risk to stay free.

Lmurder terrorists have probably existed almost as long as humans on Earth and go back in U.S. history at least to the harassment of the redcoats - earlier if you count natives vs colonists. What exactly is different today than in the 50's other than then it was the Communists that kept us awake?

glorfindel
06/10/12 6:42 pm

@timeout Our freedoms need to be taken away in order for us to stay free? That doesn't sound like a stupid contradiction at all...

timeout Boston Strong
06/10/12 6:39 pm

Zod Above Pugetropolis
06/10/12 5:26 pm

timeout your last post sounds like an acknowledgement that we've become less free, but that there's a good reason. In my view there's never a good reason to sacrifice privacy or liberty, otherwise known as civil rights (vs Constitutionally guaranteed rights).

06/10/12 5:26 pm

Now gays can marry in some states, women are getting higher job positions, and less racism exists. If you say no because of the TSA, patriot act, etc. then you are selfish! People die because of acts of terrorism. These safety precautions have stopped some terrorism acts and saved American lives!!
