Looking back at my own experience, the days started too early...8:00, and were too long, ending at 3:30, with just a 25 minute lunch break. In my junior year, I got up around 5:30 to deliver newspapers for money. I stayed after school as late as 6:30 for basketball practice. That spring I missed two weeks of school after catching pneumonia, likely due to a weakened immune system from overwork.

They need to adjust. Chances are if they enter the work world a schedule will begin early. The work world will not adjust to them.

Politely disagree. Their circadian rhythm will change naturally as they mature into adulthood.

In addition to what the others said, many offices don't open until 9. I know of many schools that start at 7. It's ridiculous.

There is definitive research that deals with the circadian rhythms of adolescents. The short version is they are not morning people and fair much better on a more delayed schedule than is typically offered by our high schools.
