"'I don't believe in charities,' said Mayor [Bernie] Sanders who went on to question the 'fundamental concepts on which charities are based' & contended that government, rather than charities, should take over responsibility for social programs."-NYT

Both should do their part. There is enough suffering to go around that we shouldn't be arguing who's responsibility it is.

I understand why he said that. In a perfect world where charities were held accountable and we didnt have to worry about whether or not they actually distribute their donations as promised, I'm all for private charity. But this isn't a perfect world, and I'm left in a strange middle ground between agreeing and disagreeing

Sanders actually has a point on that one. Private charities are often unaccountable for the consequences of their actions and subvert the capacity of the state. However, this problem is mostly relevant in the Global South.

This comment was probably in response to George W's " faith-based initiative" where he was proposing that government provide Christian charities American tax dollars and he was taking money away from government social programs.

No it wasn't. That's completely made up. This comment was made in 1980.

I don't think he said charities should be banned as some are suggesting. I do think the average charity is even better at wasting money than the government.

There are a lot of terrible charities out there that care more about their profits than actual charity work. I can understand part of this, but to get rid of all charities is ridiculous

This is absolutely ridiculous. They're suggesting that independent charities be banned? Because government is more efficient? Please, when has government ever been more efficient.

Independent charities help those truly in need for different reasons, while government just gives out money to people, 99% of whom have no intent of changing.

I disagree. It's the governments job to make sure its citizens have the ability to succeed but it shouldn't act as a charity. The government shouldn't be spending as much on social safety nets as it does today.

The then Burlington mayor made these comments at the kickoff of the 40th annual Chittenden County United Way fund-raising drive.
