Why does our culture suggest that we have to say something to someone after s/he sneezes?
Because it's the polite thing to do.
It's ridiculous. www.youtube.com/watch?v=KinXzRCjY4A&sns=em
Hahahaha! I remember that episode. It's still the polite thing to do though. 😜
I don't know, but I ignore it when people sneeze. Should we start saying some generic phrase every time somebody farts, too?
You're sooo good lookin
It's from old superstitions and has simply become common practice.
If a person sneezes I will say gesundheit purely out of habit.
Saying nothing is considered somewhat rude. There's even a Seinfield about it:).
I find it more rude when total strangers feel the need to bless me (as if they possess that power) every time I sneeze. It's annoying and unwelcome. Just leave me be.
I couldn't agree with you more.
I can look past the religious connotations too; that's not the issue. It's really anything they say to me, even gesundheit. Mind your B.
Yup! It's a stupid and invasive custom.
I happen to really enjoy sneezing. Don't interrupt my fun 😁
