Why does our culture suggest that we have to say something to someone after s/he sneezes?

I don't know, but I ignore it when people sneeze. Should we start saying some generic phrase every time somebody farts, too?

If a person sneezes I will say gesundheit purely out of habit.

Saying nothing is considered somewhat rude. There's even a Seinfield about it:).

I find it more rude when total strangers feel the need to bless me (as if they possess that power) every time I sneeze. It's annoying and unwelcome. Just leave me be.
