Congratulations, polygamy is now legal. Not only that, but your SO says that it would be OK for you to get another spouse. Is there anyone in your current life that you would consider for spouse number two?

I would have to get spouse #1 first. And then no I would not get a second.

That's a bunch of crazy talk. One spouse is plenty. If I were married to two or more, I would be dead within a month. Suicide.

YES, I agree, as well! We made that vow before God to be faithful ONLY to each other! We were both virgins when we married, have been married 38 years, and can’t even IMAGINE being with anyone else!

Besides that, it’s hard enough keeping one marriage alive and thriving. I don’t see how anyone in their right mind would WANT to try for more! Marriage is hard work! LOL

That's why broken in is better. They have realized that they aren't princesses anymore and their self-esteem is not connected to how much time and money you spend on them. Expectations are often so low that as long as you pay bills and make it home every few days without a communicable disease...that's enough.

I'm not aware of any bible verses that speak against polygamy, is this one of those instances of added Catholic rules?

ronderman North Carolina
12/18/15 4:49 pm

Off the top of my head, the New Testament states that a teacher or deacon should be the husband of one wife. I believe there are other verses as well. I will look.

ronderman North Carolina
12/18/15 4:51 pm

Debut 17:17 says that a king should have only one wife.

ronderman North Carolina
12/18/15 4:57 pm

1 Corinthians 7:2

But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.

That's the only thing I can find. All other verses relating to one wife are from a view of church leadership.

12/18/15 5:10 pm

Dfish, added Catholic rules?

Thanks Ron!!!

dfish at home
12/18/15 5:34 pm

Yeah none of those are anti polygamy. The Corinthians one is clearly saying that to avoid sexual immorality people should get married, as opposed to not being married. It says nothing about limiting it to one spouse.

The Deuteronomy verse: many Deuteronomy rules are specifically for the Jews at the time, this one is even more specifically just for the king.

Yes Catholic leaders draw conclusions from verses that are not agreed upon by theologians outside of Catholicism. Ex: Onan spilling his seed being used as anti masturbation.

12/18/15 5:54 pm

Well we don't exactly agree upon the Protestant interpretations either.

ronderman North Carolina
12/18/15 5:58 pm

Dfish may be referring to a comment I made on another poll. The subject was on the matter of "mortal sins". I explained that Protestants don't abide by that theology and it isn't found in the bible. That comes from Catholic tradition. I think she was asking if this was another instance of Christians confusing tradition with what's actually found in the scriptures.

Am I right dfish?

dfish at home
12/18/15 7:44 pm

Yes, that is exactly what I'm trying to get at

ronderman North Carolina
12/19/15 5:16 am

To answer your question dfish, I would say that since we can not find a verse forbidding it for the common man, I would say that it is a moral tradition (one that I agree with:). I don't know if I'd "blame" the Catholics though.

12/19/15 7:13 am

Why not, we get blamed for everything else! Lol. Being blamed for monogamy isn't so bad.

dfish at home
12/19/15 5:17 pm

Well what do the Catholics say about monogamy/polygamy?

12/19/15 8:24 pm

Genesis 2:24 and Ephesians 5:31 point to man and woman and not multiples. However, while many faiths dismiss the OT as being fulfilled, we take many parts of it including this one. Hope that helps.

dfish at home
12/19/15 11:10 pm

Both verses are clearly pro monogamy but still nothing that says polygamy is a sin or wrong

12/20/15 8:00 am

So if I can't find anything that says it's wrong then it must not be wrong? I'm not sure where you are going with this.

dfish at home
12/20/15 2:33 pm

If God doesn't say it's a sin then why would I view it as such?

12/20/15 5:57 pm

Well, God doesn't say that being a lesbian is a sin either. He just refers to men. So lesbians get a pass!

dfish at home
12/21/15 12:04 am

Sure. Any other examples of your inferred sins that aren't in the bible?

12/21/15 4:09 am

Ok I'm it sure if you just want to be difficult.

ronderman North Carolina
12/21/15 5:01 am

Dfish, the baptist denomination has lots. My parents are in their mid 70s and have never had alcohol. (Because they were raised to believe it's a sin). The school my kids go to will not sanction a prom because it's dancing (that's changing slowly, but many still feel it's wrong). Is cursing a sin? I don't know of any verses forbidding it, but I can count on one hand the number of times I have dropped the Fbomb. Many Christians believe that tattoos are a sin, if they are then it's a sin to eat pork, shrimp and lobster (all are forbidden in the Old Testament).

The fact is, that Christians are commanded by Jesus to do one thing. . .love. Love God above all else and love your neighbor as yourself. If we would only get this right, we would change ourselves and then the world.

12/21/15 8:58 pm

And I'm not trying to be rude MrsC, I just have a blunt way of talking sometimes.
Thanks for the examples Ronder, I have heard and encountered those schools of thought before. Some have better arguments than others. First off, I can barely keep up with one wife's requirements. Multiple wives sounds like a level of hell.
