To maintain U.S. continued military edge over China and Russia, Pentagon wants at least $12 billion to fund Artificial Intelligence based weapon technology in 2017. Do you find this a good use of taxpayer dollars?

AI weapon technology to me, simply means a program designed to see the psychological traits of human behavior and arrest you before you commit crime. Like the movie, Minority Report... Every hate crime leaves a before and after bread crumbs. I support it.

Great way to spend money... I vote for Robot teachers, police and politicians... All can be honest robots!!!

What exactly AI do they have in mind.

And not nearly enough on education!!

Captainbstring Biden is a Clown
12/15/15 3:02 pm

So you suggest that we fall behind the other countries and become weaker and less prepared than this president has made us already? Also, MONEY has been proven not to be the silver bullet to improve education. The fix for education must come from the home. The parents must do their jobs BEFORE a teacher can teach a child.

Captain... I was mocking him because he used the wrong "to/too" I don't agree with cutting defense spending whatsoever

It's a little misleading since the $12B is for a variety of programs not just AI. The list of programs sounds like normal DARPA funding and the article didn't say if this is new funding ir just continuation

There are all sorts of movies detailing the dangers of self-controlling weapons, but the main concern really is that these weapons can be hacked by the enemy and then the code rewritten so that it will attack us instead, or just not attack at all.

I am for defence spending, but AI is dangerous stuff. Hawking, Musk, and others have warned us of its dangers.

AI that could decide to go in for a kill on its own is dangerous. The day humans are outwit by machines means they are no longer in control.

Good idea bad price tag. The pentagon has consistently shown over the last two decades that it does not spend money effectively. Serious reforms should be taken so that the Pentagon may become far more efficient and ultimately spend less money.

FlipFlopGirl Sic semper tyrannis
12/14/15 8:58 pm

True but a lot of that $12B goes back into the economy and employs civilians, subcontractors, suppliers for parts, and multiple other types of services. Taxes are paid on that money and it's paid back to the local state and fed gov. Circle of life. Lol

Grimmy13 Palehorse
12/14/15 10:05 pm

The pentagon does not get to choose what to spend on. The vast majority is mandated by congress.

FlipFlopGirl Sic semper tyrannis
12/15/15 2:56 pm

It's not so black and white. Pentagon puts together a budget. Congress agrees. President signs. Congress gets broad categories - not individual line items. Pentagon gives out money to the branches, the commands and programs. I have some financial understanding of how it works in the DOD. I work for a working capital command, we pitch our services to the DoD FMS other agencies etc for RDT&E for the STEM areas. There is some flexibility as long as it fits time purpose and amount statutes in each program. The budget process is at a much higher level at Congress.

Really? China easily has over twice the active and reserve forces the U.S. has, a large ICBM capability, they are running SSBN patrols, have anti-satellite weapons, are building the Spratleys into armed fortresses and are cyber attacking us daily.

Your statement makes it seem like you doubt me. It is common knowledge that America has a more powerful (or at least more expensive) military that greatly surpasses China.

SonofMetal Heavy Metal

Americas geographic location makes the Chinese reserve forces pretty invalid. Anti missile defense is probably our biggest concern.

12/15/15 10:10 am

There it is! "Let's arbitrarily compare the US military budget to other countries while ignoring geography, threats, history, resources, technology, etc etc etc". There are people whose job at the Pentagon is to think about what they do and don't need money for and they know congressman don't wanna give them any money because of armchair generals that want freedom without taxes.

We don't need that garbage to fend off either of them, just a good navy. Let the European part of NATO pick up the slack and bring their militaries back up to reasonable strength. That would be deterrent enough.

SonofMetal Heavy Metal
12/14/15 11:30 pm

You realize the only reason they aren't is because we've essentially handed our strength to them? They have no reason to spend and build those things up when we already have it covered for them.

I really don't think the same clowns that want to spy on our every move while at the same time prove over and over and over they can't even protect their own data much less ours should be given the money to develop autonomous weapons, because they really do seem dumb enough to do just that if we let them. And then they'll be all like "Huh, did not see that coming" when the things go Skynet on us. Or even more likely, when they get hacked and are used against us.
