Associate Justice Antonin Scalia has been widely criticized for what many believe are racist remarks regarding affirmative action and black people, saying "I don't think...it's a good thing...to admit as many blacks as possible." Agree with Scalia?

I agree with him that affirmative action is trash, but I still think he's a racist. There are a lot of better ways to approach this issue then the way he did.

Not his words. He is quoting the arguments being put before the court.

It's true though. Admitting anyone for the color of their skin is racist. it's like admitting only white people.

Minority applicants who would not otherwise be admitted in the absence of the affirmative action programs are more often than not being done a disservice. Students who are denied on the basis of race have been unfairly targeted by a misguided, outdated program that ironically legitimizes the same crimes it seeks to prevent. Students who are accepted by color rather than merit are placed into a program they typically are unsuited for, which inevitably leads to unnecessarily high dropout rates. It's a lose-lose situation, and I sincerely hope the Supreme Court has the wisdom and foresight to put and end to it.

They don't have to accept an unqualified candidate.

They do, however, accept less qualified applicants. That's guaranteed by the nature of the process.

That's not all he said...

What he said wasn't even racist.

Right. Black people DO belong in lower track schools...

polster2 US
12/14/15 9:44 am

He said unqualified black people belong in easier schools, just like unqualified people of any other race. What's wrong with saying that? Stupid people shouldn't go to Harvard. I have no problem with that.

You're just trying to stir up controversy where there isn't any.

BeachSt Coastal Virginia

Ok. It's not even exactly about what he said. It's that he says stuff like this. He's a known racist.

What else has he said that you believe is racist?

Yes of course. Affirmative action is outdated.

The country has come a long way in forty years.

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
12/14/15 9:14 am

A long way but not all of the way. Studies are still saying police plant guns on black victims. Mortgage companies still discriminate based on perceived race. Harvard has done studies that say those with black sounding names face a harder time moving up the social ladder. We're not out of the woods yet..

Mortgage companies discriminate based upon ability to pay back the loan.

kscott516 Masks fail
12/14/15 9:21 am

Well, you said it was based on race.

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
12/14/15 9:28 am

It can be both.

polster2 US
12/14/15 9:29 am

What if it's just a coincidence that those who are least able to pay off their loans tend to be black?

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
12/14/15 9:32 am

Oh, of course kscott. Because you said so? You know there are court cases that disagree with you..

Oh great, an anecdotal case. And if they are found guilty they should be prosecuted to the full extent since discrimination based on race is ILLEGAL. Do you think there are any black business owners or employees that discriminate against white people?

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
12/14/15 9:41 am

It is illegal, but you said it doesn't happen. It does. And that's another notch in the history of racial discrimination.. Look it up. I posted it as a "it obviously still happens today so you know it was rampant back in the day," but you still dont believe that

polster2 US
12/14/15 9:43 am

City governments in cities like Baltimore and Detroit, which are run by blacks, discriminate against white people frequently in the hiring and promotion process.

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
12/14/15 9:46 am

They have AA. That's not discrimination, that's US policy

polster2 US
12/14/15 9:49 am

I'd say it's discrimination against white and Asian people, who tend to be more qualified than black and Hispanic people.

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
12/14/15 9:53 am

They're not required to accept unqualified candidates. That's a myth.

polster2 US
12/14/15 9:54 am

Then why does enrollment of black and Hispanic students fall after the banning of affirmative action?

polster2 US
12/14/15 9:55 am

Why are fewer blacks and Hispanics employed when affirmative action is banned?

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
12/14/15 10:00 am

I don't know, I'm not an admissions officer. AA just pressures them to hire/accept more or provide a publicly available statement as to why they didn't accept them. I saw plenty of those. Plus, it's not just for blacks; it's for all minorities.

"When accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression." Look at it from a minority's perspective- getting a chance in a society that has systematically made it impossible for upward mobility for minorities.

polster2 US
12/14/15 10:02 am

Asians are actually harmed by affirmative action, but no liberal calls that "institutional racism." Why is that?

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
12/14/15 10:03 am

Asians are a minority that benefit from AA.

polster2 US
12/14/15 10:11 am

Not really. Their enrollment increases after AA is banned.

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
12/14/15 10:21 am

Jesus man do you wanna go subpopulation by subpopulation? Would you prefer quotas or is everything racist?

polster2 US
12/14/15 10:23 am

I'd like everyone to be treated equally, regardless of race. You want discrimination, which is racist.

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
12/14/15 10:27 am

How naive can you be? We had that for centuries and you see how well that went... Outright discrimination may be illegal but AA policies are the only thing protecting minorities from implicit bias.

We had that test run; it failed. Time for something new.

polster2 US
12/14/15 10:29 am

It's totally laughable to think that every single admissions counselor is a racist. Where do you come up with these absurd ideas?

BeachSt Coastal Virginia
12/14/15 10:31 am

Where did I even say that...

I'm done. You're for tried and failed, antiquated ideas. The proof was in the court cases. Have a nice day.

polster2 US
12/14/15 10:35 am

Where is your evidence that every admissions counselor in America is a racist? Still waiting...

kscott516 Masks fail
12/14/15 10:37 am

NOWHERE did I say it doesn't happen. In fact, I said it was an anecdotal case and that they should be prosecuted if found guilty because that is illegal. That doesn't constitute "institutional racism" though. The vast majority of people are not racists and our society does not condone it. But AA is racist for pressuring businesses to hire lesser qualified candidates to meet a skin color quota or face public scrutiny and humiliation.
