If you live in a developed country and have a child, you are directly contributing to the destruction of the planet. In general, do potential parents consider climate change enough before having children?
I'm vegan and adopted kids so I'm trying to do my part.
Man, you went full retard on this one didn't you.
Yes, the correct amount of consideration is not at all.
Fight global warming.
What a ridiculously moronic question. Cole, you really should get some help for your issues!
Whats section 12?
One of many reasons I would only ever adopt, even if I could have my own kids.
I thought this question was a joke at first it was so retarded.
So, if you voted yes, and you follow this logic to its conclusion, are you willing to sacrifice for the good of the planet? I'm not just talking about not having kids...
I didn't think so.
I fully disagree with the first part of your poll. There's just so much wrong with that assumption.
I reject your premise.
The presumption is that a person can only have negative impact on the environment and ignores the possibility of technological advances.
Yes, I considered it and decided that continuing my genetic line was more beneficial. 😏
Too bad. 😜😇
Only self destructive fascists. After all, their offspring could be the conqueror(s) of clean energy.
Oh, oh! OMG! I love you! It feels so good! But what about climate change?
Nah, I can't see anyone considering climate change when they're making children.😂
That statement might rival the town in NC that wouldn't allow a solar panel farm because it might suck all the energy from the sun for dumb thinking.
I always found you to be a thought-provoking user, but this level of pessimism, cynicism and nihilism is getting way over the top. At this point, you are becoming somewhat of a caricature of yourself. Plus, population size has nothing to do with climate change. Climate change/environmental degradation is the result of wasteful use of resources and the lack of renewable, sustainable energy sources.
It's just a question: and yes, population does in fact impact the climate and environment. As population increases, so do emissions, resource consumption, habitat destruction, etc. And in developed countries, where this consumption is higher, the impact on the environment per child is greater.
"population size has nothing to do with climate change"
There is nothing pessimistic, cynical, or nihilistic about this poll. I'm simply being realistic. Overpopulation is related to climate change. Sure, we could go anarcho-primitivist and live in huts with dirt floors - then you're right, we could have 100 billion people on this planet and it wouldn't matter much, at least as far as climate change goes. But if we want to live decent lives, then of course overpopulation is related to climate change.
Perhaps I worded things a bit too bluntly for your taste. Fine. If I always posted happy polls like a blind optimist, no one would reconsider their opinions or the consequences of the actions I call into question. The fact that you reacted strongly to this poll suggests that I accomplished exactly what I wanted.
It is mostly connected to how we use resources. If the entire world, by the year 2030, made a commitment to completely phase out fossil fuels and replaced 100 percent of our energy demands with renewable energy such as wind, solar, nuclear and geothermal (among others) you will see climate change reduced. That is a much more positive and effective goal than population reduction. If you truly believe that overpopulation is the cause of climate change, the implication of that is that someone has to die or draconian limitations on basic human rights are implemented. That cannot be done simply by encouraging the use of contraception, it can only be done by government force that will ultimately be disproportionately felt by developing nations.
Do you truly believe that the world can phase out fossil fuels completely in 14 years and 1 month?
First of all, the Earth's population will peak in 2050 and then slowly decline. The entire concept of overpopulation is a myth perpetuated by white Westerners, and the solutions to which will be disproportionately felt by people in developing countries. The only way to truly achieve the depopulation that people like you want to see is either through genocide or the use of draconian government force via forced abortions and sterilization. Also, if overpopulation is such a problem than the logical conclusion for you is simply to commit suicide. Nothing is stopping you!
Maybe by the year 2030 is a bit generous, but definitely by 2050. All that is needed is political will, and we can easily build the world free of fossil fuels. All that is needed is for governments and investors to seriously invest in renewable energy sources. The technology is already there, all we need is will power.
The powers that be most likely not allow that to happen. Governments, investors, and companies have historically not done what's in the best interest of the planet or society. The year is 2015 - 34 years and 1 month away from 2050 - and many Americans stil don't care about/don't believe in anthropogenic climate change. They elect politicians who share they beliefs, and these politicians (who are also influenced by big money) don't enact any legislation to solve climate change. Hell, one of these deniers could be in the White House starting in 2016.
Also, I believe there's some disagreement about when human population will begin to decline. Certain research says that population could continue to increase until 2100.
The effects of a population of 11 billion on climate change would be tremendous, especially if African countries were to significantly develop and achieve a higher standard of living.
Coming from Chimama, that's a complement.
Here a good answer. Eliminate GMO farming which would create a food shortage world wide. Divert more food sources to create Ethanol which would further cause starvation. After a few months world population would stabilize.
And outlaw meat farms. Don't want animal farts destroying the planet.
So many false premises, haha.
But, but, what about the pledges in Paris. That should save us!
Ever hear of evolution? The kids will become climate tolerant!
Yeah, in how many million years?
About the same amount of time the temp goes up 3 degrees.
If I consequently follow your logic, we should better go extinct. Sorry but that's ridiculous. Exponential technological progress will save the planet before we destroy it.
The Paris accords will save us all!
That's laughable and extremely pessimistic.
The kids will evolve into camel like creatures though the theory of evolution. Men will have one hump and women two nice humps!
