When posting/commenting online on any type of app, website, or social media (SOH, Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, blog, etc), do you censor yourself or choose not to post something for fear of repercussions with your job?
I not afraid to express my views.
Don't have to worry about that just yet, so no.
I don't post much on Facebook I just lurk, and all I do on Twitter is bitch about politics so I don't think anyone would care
I say nothing online that I wouldnt say in public.
I stand by it all.
My Boss needs me to do his dirty work, Im not going anywhere.
I'm retired. I have cautioned young relatives to be thoughtful about what they put out there.
Maybe Facebook, but not anything else
It totally depends on which context you mean by sensor. I usually do a lot of word play. Say something m, erase it, put it back, revise it, ect.
No, but my wife does regularly (teacher with highly unintelligent coworkers).
In terms of censorship, it helps when you post, or have ever held accounts, with so few social media sites.
If by "censor yourself", you mean controlling emotions; being deliberative; being respectful; being authentic and honest, then "Yes", I censor myself. But if that's the case, then I'd have to say I ALWAYS censor myself, because I am exactly in real life, who I appear to be in this stew of social media anonymity. :)
You definitely exude authenticity wherever I see your comments. You're also caring and kind with your words. The combination is appreciated by so many. 😊
Thank you, dearest One! Although unintended, I do know there've been times I've authentically raised the ire of some, which also happens quite naturally...😜
Pfft, I've done that too. I will apologize if there a need. I find there usually isn't one.
Of course not! 😀
Yes, almost always. People who find out I'm crazy aren't likely to give me a job. 🙃
Kidding aside, yes. I don't need something coming back to bite me later.
☺ You are far from crazy (well, maybe crazy sweet).
That's my kinda crazy! 😊
LOL. Thank you. 😊
You should hire Kay too. She's sweeter then me by far. You both are.
TierasPet! There will be no such poppycock on this thread! 😠
Oh, but there will. I'm having fun here. 😊
Oops! I guess you can have as much fun as you want here. I just noticed this was YOUR thread! 🙄
Well, to be fair, it is Kay's poll. She can tell me to stop. 😳
In a thread full of compliments, no one needs to stop. ☺
Thank you Kay. I knew you'd be sweet. 😇
Not just out of fear that, but I figure it is better to watch what you post anyways.
The only reason I said No is because I'm Retired
I would worry about Any career job
Do Not Post ANYTHING!
It will bite you at work!
You are Not protected
Yes. My Instagram is public but I never post anything I wouldn't be comfortable showing to a kid in front of my boss. That's my way of making a decision about what to post. Cute animal photos it is! Lol
I work at a school
Yeah, i don't say anything that could impact negatively on my ability to get a job later in life
I wish more young people thought like you!
So do I 😁😉
I guess I do, but I don't really think about it anymore. I'm Facebook friends with many of my past and current employees and bosses, so I've become accustomed to watching myself.
I'm a housewife, so no.
Considering the only thing I ever post comments on is here no.
No, because I created an elaborate alias on FB. It's close to my real profile but still not immediately recognizable. Also, I don't friend working colleagues so I separate weblife from real life.
What I do in my personal life should have no effect on my professional life.
I never censor myself, but I am somewhat respectful....kinda.
Yes. Anything you post on Facebook is public. Just remember that...
Just on FB, which I almost never touch anymore.
Considering the amount of trouble I've gotten myself into, yes. I do not use Twitter anymore. SOH profile is private. Don't post on FB anymore. Instagram is private and removed my SOH connection from it. I'm safer now, but not safe. Once the investigation is over I can open up more again :)
I don't have social media accounts for that reasOn.
I always use a pseudonym, so people would have to actually try to figure out it was me.
I never mention where I work by name. Otherwise any mention of a patient interaction would violate HIPAA or anything negative about the org or my coworkers would be public criticism and I'd be fired. It's a cutthroat business.
My boss can't shut me up and clearly knows how I feel. I look forward to our discussions.
Not my job, because it's not like they can fire me from retired, but yes. SOH, for example, is rated 12+, but I'm a grownup. I tone it down a lot.
I keep personal info at a minimum. But I still self censor.
I'm self-censored. I have no illusions of true anonymity and act as such.
Nope. I don't have facebook or Twitter.. and I don't advertise my name
I don't post many details about my job anywhere on the Internet.
Oh yes. Mostly having to do with my thoughts about the LDS church.
Not sure I understand the choices...
No. I have no filter.
Really? You seem so out of control.
I am, haha. I've always had a tough time understanding consequences.
Have you learned not to put a penny in an electrical socket yet?
What appears is what you'll get .
You understand how I feel!
I know that there are parents and potential employees trolling around and knowing how competitive teaching is, I don't risk it. Even my husband could be affected.
I'm with you! Even when the dumbest things come up like the mom smoking weed and taking Vicodin while pregnant who couldn't understand why CPS was on her case...I had to bite my tongue!
I feel that I have to do this all the time. Countless times I have wanted to comment on something but held back for fear of it affecting my job.
Which topics, exactly?
It's not so much the topic but rather what my stance might be. If it goes against what some might considerate inappropriate, I can't chance it.
Sex abortion, racial issues come to mind first
I don't see why you would get fired for expressing your views on those issues. Unless you start calling women sluts and pro-choicers murderers, or saying that unarmed black teenager deserve to get murdered, you're not going to get fired for your (I'm guessing) conservative opinions.
Actually, most of my opinions are very liberal. But, you would be surprised at what teachers aren't allowed to say without repercussions.
Well, that's a big problem with our education system, then. Teachers, like professors, should be allowed to express their opinions. Students are going to have to deal with people they disagree with once they graduate, so they better get used to it early.
I suppose I am overly cautious sometimes, but it can feel stifling.
On FB, mostly yes.
On SoH, no. I treat people on SoH like I would a big party where people who like to debate, talk, share, and explore let it all go...like an intellectual nudist colony. This is who I am. Facebook, not so much. With family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, SoH people, I keep FB as a more "socially conventional" mode to communicate.
Intellectual nudist colony...I love it! 😀
