After Mitt Romney’s sobering defeat in 2012, the party’s autopsy heavily stressed the fact that the GOP was going to do its "utmost to reach out to demographics that usually prefer Democrats." Do you believe their current efforts are working?
One "Black", one "Indian", two "Hispanics", and one "Woman". They reached out. Unfortunately when your minority's don't appeal to the group they represent you have a bigger problem.
In my 20's I would have never voted Republican. Mitt Romney could have never won due to his ties with the LDS. Everybody under 30 knows they' re too extreme unless ur an LDS member. Sorry bad stereotype. Anyways whatever the GOP is doing now has me at least considering and researching all their candidates except Trump(he's a joke and I would defect or kill myself if he was voted in out of shame and dissapointment that my fellow patriots only get their facts from E entertainment news and TMZ) when in past elections I was dead set that all republicans are evil greedy big business men.
I'm unaware of the particulars of all the gaffes you're referring to. The only candidate in this field who has not roundly condemned Trump's comments as it pertains to Muslims is Ted Cruz who won't say anything bad about Republicans --- until he does.
I'm not convinced that all of the Republicans have made statements that have been derogatory towards those groups. It's true that the nominal position of the GOP against gay marriage is discriminatory towards gays, but that is not necessarily indicative of hatred towards that sexual orientation. It's true that a couple of Republicans in this field have called for less immigration, which will hurt Hispanic communities, but most of them (with some poignant exceptions) have gone out of their way to avoid disparaging Latinos. It's true that the policies of the majority of the candidates (with some exceptions) against the BLM movement prolongs institutional injustice, but that hasn't stopped Republicans from reaching out the black community. It's true that many women support Planned Parenthood and abortion, but our disagreement towards this policy is not based on hatred, but upon love. I don't see the world you're illustrating.
SKIN - LOL! I didn't point to all, but assume you're gay, and Santorum got the nod. Or assume you're black, and Cruz got the nom. Or hispanic and it turns out to be Carson, or Trump. Do you take the time to figure out the nuances, or vote for the candidate who has been vocally supportive of your group the entire time? Oh, and imagine everytime you turn on the news you see about 50% of the people in the other camp rabidly support the most radical of the candidates. How likely would you be REALLY REALLY want to join that particular team?
The "sobering defeat" was due to the Repubs once again running a moderate or "Democrat Lite". And thus, millions of conservatives stayed home on Election Day...
@shazam. Completely agree. Repeal citizens united, put in campaign spending limits and donations (Germany has a good model). Restrict Federal employees from moving to private sector jobs to reduce conflict of interest. Impose term limits. Restrict lobbying. I could go on...but if we don't put aside our party identities and stand up for what's right, these crooks are going to continue to play us off each other while they rob us blind.
Bahahaha. By what? Attacking unions? Trying to repeal Obamacare? Trying to increase defense spending? Eliminating the inheritance tax? Reducing the highest income tax rates? Eliminating capital gains tax? Weakening Dodd-Frank? Refusing to allow the CDC to maintain statistics on gun deaths? Voting to defund planned parenthood? Blocking minimum wage increases? They can talk about their 'concern' for working Americans all they like but their actions speak louder than words. These clowns are the same shills for the .1% that they have always been. Their just doubling down on the Fox News demographic.
Partisanship or lack of it has nothing to do with this question or my answer. The Republicans said they were going to move to the center after Mitt lost and they have not done that. Furthermore, if you were paying attention you would know that ~150 families have provided >50% of the GOP campaign financing. They aren't donating those millions to strengthen the middle class. Those donations are an investment to increase their wealth and lower their taxes at our expense. With the possible exception of Rand Paul, the Republicans are auctioning off America and turning it into a plutocracy of the highest bidders. Ask a similar question about Democrats and I will rip them too. It's the other side of the same coin. Heads they win, tails we lose. Vote them all out, start over.
SQUID - with you up to the vote them all out. Kick out the ~150 instead, drastically reform contributions, eliminate PACs/SPACs, drastically reduce amount of total spend, and limit political access (eg lobbies) after they leave. Those there for the moola will split. Those complaining about not being able to do anything b/c they're always campaigning will stick around. In an absolutely ideal world I'd completely abolish political parties. End the "our team v your team" superbowl mentality, and replace with individual cands standing on the individual platform they support. Voting out who we have just gives us a new batch to be quickly corrupted.
