New Jersey has reportedly banned people from making "big smiles" for their driver's license photos, since the smiles can cause problems for facial recognition software. Reasonable or ridiculous?
Ridiculously reasonable or reasonable ridiculous... It's a toss up. X-/
Big brother needs better software.
It used to take an hour or two to get your license here then after that they would ask you to "smile". I was so mad I never did. It has improved but back then the DMV was awful.
I thought this was the norm? I was always told not to smile in IDs in WI- I never knew it was for facial recognition software; I just thought that it was for police officers. You're not likely to be smiling when you get pulled over!
Then again, who can muster a smile in the DMV, either?
It says big smile, not no smile.
Same in Iowa. As if a drivers license photo couldn't get any worse.
Not ridiculous at all, how is this different than maybe covering part of your face with your hand?
Please don't smile, it will make it too hard for the ministry of information to track you. If we would just get bar codes or gps chips implanted this would be a non issue. I should point out I am kidding before a politician reads this and thinks it is a good plan.
I didn't think smiling was a big problem in Jersey.
Happened in Illinois a long time ago. This definitely isn't news
Ridiculous but, then, my home state is often ridiculous!
I don't understand why this is national news. They started that in Indiana over 4 years ago. You can't wear glasses ether if you have them!
The State Dept has the same regulation for passport photos.
Nys has done the same thing. You're not allowed to smile at all.
Guys...who fucking cares? It doesn't matter.
Sounds Ridiculous & Very Stupendous They Just Dont Want To See People Up
It's not desirable, but it's pretty reasonable. It's definitely not ridiculous.
What I think is ridiculous is that anybody would get upset over something so trivial.
Just claim you a Muslim, you'll be able to do anything you want then.
Stupid! I don't want my driver's license to look like a mug shot and if facial recognition software isn't good enough to work with "big smiles" they shouldn't be using it
Officially "banning" it is kinda ridiculous but I understand why you would tell them not to smile too big.
you people have no idea how many criminals are taken down because of this software do you
I mean, it sounds a little bit overboard, but its not too much of a hassle to just look at the camera without a smile right?
It is natural for me to smile with teeth and was offended my state government doesn't allow that.
Iowa did the same thing. I renewed my license this year and I thought she was joking, I actually laughed because it was funny. Then the crabby DMV lady did not laugh and proceeded to tell me to get my picture taken and not smile.
You aren't allowed to smile in your passport picture anymore either. I don't see the big deal.
No one from VA is responding to me...
I think the DMV enforces this policy by making the experience miserable and time consuming.
Texas does the same...
They already do this in Virginia
So take it like a mugshot?
Oh NJ. Why you gotta pull this crazy "stuff". I think that rule is lame
It's not a picture for you to look nice, it's meant for ID and ID only, stop smiling like an idiot
Make better recognition software.
Virginia has a no smile policy. It's not for facial recognition, it to show detail of the natural way we look.
Where is this facial recognition software being used?
Unbelievable, I need to smile or I look hideous. This is completely unfair. I'm going to sue.
Hey you cant look away from the camera or cover your mouth either. Why? Because officials need to make sure you be identified from your license. Lets face it a drivers license is a privilege not a right. If you dont like the rules you have to follow to drive then don't get a license.
that is why I drive around with a big smile. traffic cam's cant identify me. :-)
@kay41 ever heard of false flag terrorism? Look it up. Besides, at least I know what's going on with the government and the global banker takeover of our beloved country. So long nationalism.
Lol cmblank. I am not giving up freedoms by not smiling. I am glad our government is doing their best to protect us. You are the exact person who will be crying foul and blaming the government when an attack happens.
I'd make fun of fun Jersey morons for this but I live in a state with more morons per square inch than any other state.
@cmblanc2 OH GOD NO!!! NOT THE RIGHT TO SMILE IN ONE PICTURE!!!! THATS LIKE THE MOST IMPORTANT RIGHT EVER!!!!!
@kay41 you and others that give up freedoms in the name of "safety" are just sheep being herded to the slaughter. One of these days when the govt comes to take you to the reeducation camps you'll wish you hadn't sacrificed your liberties.
Who cares if you can't smile on your license??? I am grateful for the face recognition software. That terrorist who is arrested before he follows through on an attack is worth it.
@nnoremac its one thing to disagree with sombody, its another to act like you're better than sombody because you think you know more than sombody. unless you work with facial recognition stuff stop acting like you're so smart
Everyone is saying VA banned smiling, all the folk at the DMV just said "No teeth." They must say no smiling just to be simple? Or was my DMV person just really nice?
@pinky. It's one thing to voice your opinion, it's another entirely to act like u know what your talking about concerning intelligence practices and gathering. Let's stick to our jobs and let the specialists buy their own software eh buddy?
