I miss the 90's. Rock music died with Kurt Cobain

90s had the best. Saw Everclear, Smashing Pumpkins, NIN, STP, Prick, PUSA, Type O Negative, Foo Fighters, Garbage, Black Sunday and many more. Today it seems alt rock is bubble gum or trying to find itself again.

This old alt rock, or new alt rock!

Best concert I ever went to was The Decemberists! Probably not really an indie band, but in my eyes close enough. I love seeing the up and coming bands at the local clubs.

@ cowboy agreed I wish this was the 90s

The closest I get to alt rock that's in English is Evanescence. . .

I even wrote a 10 page essay in high school stating why mainstream pop music should be banned mainly for its comical effect.

Crystal Castles will blow your mind away.

I <3 indie music. Too bad the mainstreamers are starting to like it too.

Frankly, while much of the music is pretty good, the label "alternative" has become overused and abused to the point of having little meaning to me. Kind of like the label "racist."

06/26/12 11:07 pm

I think the name "alternative" used to have more meaning but now just represents the general sound of an awesome genre. You hipsters need to loosen up a bit.

Is it really "alternative" when it's favored by the vas majority. Sounds more like a description of mainstream rock to me.

<3 my chemical romance! ^.^

Linkin Park? 3 days grace? Do you people know what "alternative" means? More like Faith No More, NIN, or anything that is an ALTERNATIVE to what is mainstream.

06/26/12 9:45 pm

linkin park, three days grace, shinedown.... yeah.

06/26/12 9:30 pm

Adelitas Way is my favorite. Shinedown, Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, and Linkin Park are good too.

The white stripes are considered alternative rock right?

06/26/12 8:11 pm

Alternative is no longer a genre. 'Alternative' is now mainstream. Bands like NIN, Garbage, Nirvana, Alice, Pearl, Soundgarden, were Alternative until they and the sound became mainstream around 1990-91.

Love the alternative genre. I think Mumford and Sons are considered to be alternative rock so I love it.

06/26/12 7:16 pm

Linking park is awesome!!! And living things came out today!!

FearToFall what is this for
06/26/12 6:34 pm

HNN. I love alternative rock. Most of what I listen to falls under this category, but usually more on the rock-ish side of it.
I looove Train, though.

06/26/12 6:29 pm

Like? No darling I LOVE alternative. I have no idea what it is but I love it.

@askdfl those poll is about people who like it. Not the bands coming out playing yeah it's dying.

06/26/12 5:10 pm

I grew up in the 90's. So yes, I like!

Honestly, I'm not really even sure what "alternative" means anymore, but I guess I like it overall. When I think of the genre, I think of bands like Nirvana that were popular in the 90's. Who is considered "alternative" now?

06/26/12 3:31 pm

It's pretty much my main genre.

Rock can get so diverse. Country and rap are stuck in a box.

06/26/12 3:14 pm

Late 80s/ Early 90s alternative. The new stuff is total crap.

06/26/12 3:06 pm

Lmurder- obviously not. Look at the results.

RHCP (my fav although they pretty much do pop songs now :( ), Sublime, Nirvana, SOAD, those are alternative right? Newer bands i think i like are probably Rise Against, Muse, Cage the Elephant got some cool tunes... Not sure about genres. I just like what I like.

06/26/12 2:08 pm

If you count progressive rock as alternative, yes, particularly the German band Eloy which was audibly inspired by Pink Floyd.

Adult Alternative/Indie is my favorite style of music, but it's a pretty broad category that encompasses my all-time favorites and stuff I can't stand. Lou Reed/Blondie/Pixies influence - good; Nirvana/Pearl Jam/NIN - not so much. Love The Ting Tings, Social Distortion, and Bloodhound Gang.

06/26/12 1:40 pm

Alternative rock (and rock), along with jazz, a little bit of rap and a little bit of pop makes up my musical taste.

06/26/12 1:30 pm

@galen same here. We have 1 station that plays rock/metal. The rest is pop. Pop is easier to create though since 95% of the "artists" have other people writing their songs lol
