Mind-readers are a common recurrence in fiction, often accompanied by a serious concern over a near-sacred "mental privacy." Do you think the world would be a better place if all humans had evolved with the ability to read minds?
If people could read my mind I'd be in jail so no
Just a little
Lol I hope I didn't just accidently get you tagged to some list
No - then there would be no compelling reason for cell phones, so no SOH. What fun would that be?
I don't think I implied minds could be read at long distances.
But even if they could be, it'd be great! Then wouldn't have to buy a new iPhone every two years, you could just buy an iPod Touch and never need another iPhone.
That would be bad
No more lying. Way less anxiety. Way more freedom. We could finally see who among the most homophobic people are actually gay (Michelle Bachmans husband for one).
It would take all the fun out of getting to know people.
It would make getting to know people so much easier. And the friend zone would disappear, so if she/he really wanted to be your friend you would know if they meant it. And you'd know when it was time for that first romantic kiss, or more.
And best of all there'd be no more guessing where your date might want to have dinner. It'd be so much nicer not to have to guess and being thought selfish if you were always wanting pizza, again.
Yes, definitely. Our communication capability is painfully slow and ridiculously prone to errors and misunderstanding. That would never be an issue if we could read each other's thoughts, or even if we could just communicate telepathically.
It would be just another misused power tool.
I think we would no the full depths of human nature,....and then we'd develop thought crime laws.
I'd be dead, just walking down the street. 😎
Crap...I'd be in so much trouble!
I don't know but it would really suck if everyone could read my mind.
I don't think it's the same. They can only judge and influence your exterior, not your core.
No. I think it would result into more of a hive mind type culture. From the day people are born peers would be able to control thoughts they didn't like and keep people in line. Imagine your parents, bosses and friends all judging every thought.
They do this now. Why would this change?
And you think judging and influencing what you do, wear, and say has no influence on your mind? I think you're mistaken. I doubt you wear clothing drastically different from your peers or dance at will in the hallways. No, I bet you conform nicely to
the social expectations of those around you.
Yes, but you mentioned mostly external behaviour. And since we're such social creatures this would also impact us internally but not nearly to the same degree.
But you don't have any internal desire to do those things. And you would be internally embarrassed to be in a situation like that. Your thoughts are already being influenced profoundly.
I remember when I was being raised thinking some things were just BS and counting the days until I didn't have to play along anymore. I wouldn't have that opportunity in this new culture.
So imagine if everyone understood that and instead respected your thoughts and let you do what you want, rather than just assuming you were okay with conforming because you were externally silent.
I might have the desire to do things out of the norm but I wouldn't be embarrassed by thoughts cause I'm not sharing them.
I think peers would respect your thoughts the same way they respect what you want to say. And people just can't say whatever they want.
My immediate reaction was no. However, the more I thought about it the more sure I am that the world would be a better place with mind scanning. No more lies. I am not sure the institution of marriage could survive however.
I think we could adjust. I think there are a lot of couples who wouldn't have married each other. But I think maybe it might have fostered a deeper understanding for things like being attracted to other people. Also, you would always know exactly how
someone else felt about you. Maybe you would always end up with the "right" person without finding out later that they had different intentions or feelings.
The whole of human history would be different. From square one absolutely nothing would could be the same as it has been. It's fun to think about
We'd all be a Collective or all dead.
As a history nerd, I like to think about how specific historical events would have played out with mind-reading. Imagine World War II, the ultimate intelligence war, if there weren't any spies, secrets, or code breakers! Or the Cold War! Did some
in power really want mutual destruction? If no one on either side did, would it have ended, just like that?
Even our own personal lives would be so different. Imagine relationships without lies or secrets.
