Would you generally consider Ashkenazi, Sephardic, and Mizrahi Jews to be white or non white?
I have no clue what those mean... I just assumed Jewish ethnicity is white.
Someone's religion doesn't define what race they are
Jewishness is ethnoreligious
I have never associated race with religion so I cannot answer. Is there a racial difference?
I understand that Jewish is an ethnicity as well as a religion. I have heard Jewish described as a "race", but not in the same manner as "black" or "white" which is generally based on skin tone, and other physical features.
It is my understanding that enthnoreligious groups place more emphasis on religion and practices than skin tone or geographic origin.. So I still don't have a good answer other than I presume some are white.
I agree overall, but given that some do consider Jews white and some don't, usually based on how exactly one defines whiteness, I figured I'd ask
Matt, this is a great question. I particularly identify with this question because of my Sicilian heritage. Often, in the early days of their immigration, Sicilians were not considered white not only for their coloring but their status $$.
Ashkenazi Jews are even Caucasian Europeans
Higher melanin concentrations than your average Caucasian.
I don't know much about Mizrahi Judaism, but Sephardic Jews are often darkish in complexion. I'm Ashkenazi, though, and we're not all orthodox. Ashknazi is just the geographical term for Jews ancestrally from Central and Eastern Europe.
All. Sephardic Jews are often quite dark
What is the relevance of the question?
It's often part of a debate as to whether whiteness de notates skin tone only or history and social status as well
So part of the "white privilege" genre of racial discussion?
It crosses over, but it isn't inherently exclusive to it
White but only if they speak with a western accent.
Howdy thar buck_-a-roo!
Not exactly what I meant. But I guess it'd count :P
Would you consider North Africa. Jews to be Caucasian?
If they have a western style look, most likely. Many Europeans and Americans have some North African in their genetics. I do. About 4 percent.
More Italian looking then Swedish.
This is a hard one. While many Ashkenazi (which my husband is) and Sephardic Jews has Northern and Southern European heritage respectively, many don't really follow the same classifications as we have here. The Mizrahi Jews of Northern Africa,
Wouldn't be considered white by our standards. I think the term white is subjective and doesn't apply to all. That said, what do you think Matt?
Larry King looks white?
What do you think Larry King looks like?
Larry King is probably Ashkenazi which is Northern European.
Yes, but Robs seems to disagree.
By our standards, he's pretty white. His dad was Austrian and his mom from Belarus.
So, to the question. ASHKENAZI is white.
Possibly but then Sephardic and Mizrahi might be darker.
Uhh...whatever they feel like being considered
