Do you think that beauty pageants sexualize young girls?
The kid, ones do. The mothers want it more than the kids do. Is that awful show still on? Toddlers and Tiaras I think. My niece used to watch it.
Think? Open your eyes. It's easy to see. Dumb question.
If putting beauty on display is considered sexualizing. It's not, IMO. In fact, even the bikini portion of pageants doesn't seem sexualized at all to me. The way it's done seems almost sterile, removed from sex in a way.
Only if the participants are young girls...
It exhibits their beauty
If they're for elementary school aged girls? Usually. Middle and up? Not so often, but sometimes.
When my daughter was 12, she wanted to do a couple of these, so I let her. I didn't really sense a "sexualized" atmosphere. But for the younger ones, it does seem that they play up that angle.
I'm not sure the pageants themselves do, but from what I have seen on TV, it appears that many of the parents and coaches do.
