The GOP has politicized sanctuary cities, i.e. local government decisions about immigrants, & stated they would outlaw such. Churches also provide sanctuary to immigrants. Should the federal govt limit the rights of churches to offer sanctuary too?

I've never understood why so e one could get sanctuary in a church. Still a criminal. And why would a church want to harbor a criminal. I'd kick them out

The roots go back to the 600's in England, so it has a long history en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Place_of_Refuge#Medieval_England

I know it started a long time ago, but we are a much different world now

The only answer I can give at that point is the influences of common law still can be felt in our system, rightly or wrongly

Tax exempt churches are just another arm of the State, so YES. If the church wants to give up its tax exempt status, then NO.

That would be defying religious beliefs and militarize holy grounds. People could call sanctuary in churches since before the 1500s in England and it still sticks in America. Authorities have to respect someone in a church even if it is a criminal

Sanctuary cities for illegals....churches used to have the power to extend safety, today done against law.

Dems politicized sanctuary cities since thats who usually governs those cities. Repubs are just disgusted with the crime caused by illegals.

GOP: we are against big intrusive government unless it serves our purpose.

In all fairness, some factions of the GOP want two sets of laws: General laws based on their religious precepts, and religious law for anything they don't want to follow. This is a sticky issue oven that churches aren't state or city governments, but

It does seem odd they don't care about that sanctuary since it presumably would have the same outcome

Actually people like the GOP just want the laws on the books enforced.

Mattwall1

Wouldn't that include sanctuary given by private sources as well as public since it would technically count as harboring or abetting criminals?

The churches I've read about that give sanctuary typically allow the illegal immigrant to stay on their property without ever leaving unlike cities that allow them to roam anywhere doing what they'll do.

That would seem different (although still sanctuary)

You are going to hurt yourself trying to keep this stuff straight by applying consistent rules. The GOP will tell you when things should be local and when things should be federal, when judges should be activist or not and when to apply religion.

Are those the places where illegals can kill people and not get in trouble?

Well, they had a couple of revolving door, ciminal Illegals that were embraced by Sanctuary Cities free to kill a couple of women. we need Kate's law now.

We certainly don't need more laws. America has plenty. Why are you making a broad statement based on one or two crimes?

Unfortunately the left and the President don't obey them.

Wait, they can kill people and wouldn't get in trouble??? That's news to me. I think you're confusing illegal immigrants and police officers.

No, more Illegals in fed prisons then cops. At least they can only kill each other there.

That goes against the separation of church and state, I think it was Madison that said something to the effect the separation protects the gov from the church, and the church from the gov.

The feds should defund the cities. They can't defund the church.

Do the Feds fund cities?

If they cared explicitly about sanctuaries, they could take away their tax free status.
