There's exceptions to the rule, but it's recognized as the rule because it's very frequently true.

I remember hearing this from a teacher who taught for decades and had both parents and their children as students: kids either grow up to be exactly like their parents or the exact opposite of them.

I think it's true for these people living on welfare for generations; either the kid turns out like the parent or turns out to be the complete opposite in spite of the parent. It's usually the oldest of the family who is the one to turn it around.

Not always. My husband was raised by a welfare sponge. His brother & sister are welfare sponges. But he was determined to be more. He works very hard. He has since he got his first job at 13.

I was bound and determined not to be poor. You are at a disadvantage tho when you have no guidance, no one getting you thinking about your future and your initially goals are short term. Like where/how can I get some food, where am I gonna live,etc.
