Should law enforcement use gender/race/age "profiling" to focus greater attention on groups of people that have been statistically more likely to commit crimes?

No it was asked of gender race and age. People just are always focusing on how wrong the race side is of it. Statistics are statistics. In some cases look for white people. In others look for black people. I'm sure Asians are violent sometimes too lol

It's funny that you have to resort to correcting grammar rather than

Statistics and facts don't lie. The facts are that a certain demograpich ghat makes up 12% of the US population is responsible for 67% of ALL violent crime. Shouldn't we profile those who make up that 12% to help stop or reduce the 67% of crime they commit?

the issue is one of expectancy bias. If you profile, your attention is focused in one direction. you are more likely to reaffirm your beliefs. Many non obvious targets get missed. false positives get identified.

Democrats are dumb because the poll shows that they would choose to disregard the facts that the statistics point to. This is the whole reason the human race came up with the notion of statistics; to collect raw data and produce comprehensive information.

"Too" sweetheart. While maybe your opinion is valid (which I don't believe it is), evidently your grammar is deficient.

Every factor of our lives uses profiling. From the TSA to marketing companies. It's an accepted practice except for law enforcement where it's the most important tool. Retail is one of the biggest users as they now track race, gender and use facial expressions to strategize their floor plans.

Everyone profiles. If you want to date a man, and I introduced you to a woman, you'd be mad. See? Let's drop this wussy PC sensitive no-profiling crap before we allow more people to fly into our buildings.

My brother's car was stolen by a black guy. He went to a line-up to point out the guy. They were Chinese, Mexicans. My bro asked "wtf?" and the cops said they couldn't profile. Waste of time and cop resources.

That's because Dems want crime in the streets so that they can constantly point to it as examples of what social injustices made otherwise good people do.

Isn't the proposed assault rifle ban basically profiling?

The guns look scary, have been used is very small percentage of crimes yet all people who may want to own one are assumed to be bad and prohibited. It may be that an AR in the right hands would stop a school shooting/ save life's!

They would be the first demographic profiled for crimes the demographic was known to do. Take the DC sniper shootings. Police were looking for 30ish white guy

Profile away baby! Stop me anytime, frisk me anytime, nothing to hide and I'm sure they'll catch more of the guilty bastards by profiling. Go for it.

Statistically; mass murder is almost always committed by white men 25-50. Same with child molestation. However, this particular demographic also makes up the majority of police and government, so you won't likely ever see them getting profiled.

Listen, if this was a question of "Should police patrol places more if they have higher crime rates?" you'd say yes. It's basically the same thing.

WTF. How could anyone argue against stopping those that actually do the crime.

As soon as middle aged, chubby, Jewish, white guys start strapping bombs to their asses and Murdering innocent people.......I say: Yes and of course stop and search me.
Until then if it walks like a duck.....

According the department of homeland security there is more right wing AND ecoterrorism than Islamic terrorism in the United States. Janet was a Bush appointee. Planned parenthood attacks, attacks on Muslim and even Sikh temples, and attacks on abortion clinics all count as right wing terrorism.

Janet wants to destroy our country and profiling via the Unabomber or The Oklahoma city bombing. In not a group of white people. They were lone people. Look at the beltway snipers black Muslim. Look at all the gang members they are terrorist they terrorize whole community's. so your logic is broken

There's a lot of Pros and Cons, stereotypically, people say young black males get in more trouble with the law, but if they only focus on young black males, what about the other groups, are you gonna neglect attention on them?

The idea of using profiling to catch possible threats is good, but doing it by gender/age/race isn't. Everybody gets angry and has the possibility to lose it as hurt people, and it's evident that even now racism still exists to a certain degree.

Yes! Why not? Why shouldn't people that buy fighter caliber weapons (even though the guy used handguns) get deeper background checks? The good guys won't have anything to hide.

Stereotypes aren't always bad, but I don't think they should be considered unless there's strict evidence that they should be. It's just... Wrong, if you go around suspecting people because of their physical traits.

01/24/13 5:49 pm

Criminology = profiling. So, in real life and on shows like Criminal Minds, is it wrong for FBI profilers to use evidence to determine likely traits of a suspect? It can be a highly effective method of reducing crime and identifying criminals. That doesn't mean that we should target every black kid.

Statistically validated stereotypes are not unjustified. Nobody claims age prejudice that young people's liability insurance is higher than older people's.

There's no point in finding statistical evidence behind why crimes happen based on gender or race or anything like that. It only perpetuates stereotypes.
