Can anyone tell me why Cecil the lion, was famous, when I try to google it, all that comes up is how he was killed, and that he was famous...

Good question. Until reading these comments, I didn't know.

He was locally famous, well known to people of the area and to preserve visitors. Like Willy B was famous in Atlanta, and to those who visited the Atlanta zoo. Like Gomek was famous in St Augustine, and visitors to the Alligator Farm.

Cecil was part of a longterm Oxford study and a major tourist attraction in Zimbabwe.

Something or someone doesn't have to be known by someone random across the world or easily googled to be famous or very popular and well known in its home area.

Distraction from selling baby parts. Honestly you have more from me bitching about PP than any MSM.

You beat me to it. Look how much more upset people are about this animal than about human issues. That's the serious point about the story.

He was a stunt double in "The Wizard of Oz".

He is a tourist attraction and famous to the locals. They used to have an infestation of lions, but now there are hardly any to be found. 😞

I guess the world should establish a standard for what is considered famous. The final step of the process will involve getting your approval.

He was a tourist attraction. Many lions hide from tourists. Cecil did not.

I don't hide from them either and you can take as many photos of me as you want... Doesn't make me famous.....

Cecil is also the Lion on the intro to MGM movies.

Except MGM has been using that for 85 years and Cecil was only 13

Their old lion died. He was the new Lion till he got his head cut off.

For some odd reason, I'm calling bullshit, on this news story, I think it's all propaganda, if this lion was so famous, why can't I find what he was famous for.

I never heard the lion was "famous" just that it was well known in that area and loved by the local people.

It was collared and part of studies. And since when does news from Africa get over here unless it involves disease and/or war? Especially if your search is limited by Google.

That's why I asked.. The Internet is huge, maybe I missed something. I just put it out to find an answer... Yet no one has one...

I believe he was the oldest living lion in the study.
