Scientology: A religion or cult-like organization?
Religions and cults are differentiated only by numbers, as far as I have ever been able to tell.
It's a cult. I read some stories about Scientology and they weren't good. Hell, look at Tom Cruise. He got weird since he joined that cult. They don't believe in counseling, antidepressants that type of thing. I read one of L.Ron Hubbard's bo
Books out of curiosity. He is a whackjob. If I remember right (it was so long ago that I read it, I forgot what it's about) he thought he was reincarnated from a god or something whacked out thing like that
I was wrong. I think I'm thinking of that guy who thought he was going to go on that comet if he committed suicide. Hubbard did do some questionable things tho.
Why can't I delete my "why did I type that?" Comments?
It's all the same crap
Are they tax emempt like all the other religions? If so, yes, if not, cult.
A religion like any other.
I'd say yes and yes. Arent all religions cults?
The only difference between cult and religion is size. The negative connotations associated with the word 'cult' have given it a different social definition. Scientology is big enough to consider it a religion.
I'm sorry, answer choices should have different meanings, you can't just use synonyms
You're so clever...
It's a religion. Religions are recognized by our judicial branch as are cults. One is allowed the other not so much.
All religions started out as a cult so...
My theory is that Hubbard, Asimov, Pohl and the rest of the SyFi writers of the time were sitting around drinking and smoking pot, L Ron says; "I bet a case of beer I can make up a religion that thousands of people will pay money to follow" he won.
But the more important question is...did he ever get the case of beer?!
I would believe so, people all over the world pay money to be there.
Nik, your grandkids are very lucky to have you as a resource / guide through this world. I hope they know that. :)
Thank you Ender, that means a lot to me.
I wouldn't really call it either. It's more an expensive life counseling center
Except that when you stop using counseling services, they don't make you ex communicate from other family/friend members in the counseling service. Therefore, cult.
I was trying to go easy on them by some pointing out what they do is full body counseling, it's not a real religion. It's not about belief in anything
I doubt most respondents know very much about Scientology or about cults for that matter. It's certainly not my place to judge another person's peaceful religion.
Some aspects of it are less than peaceful.
It's not a religion by the conventional meaning of the word. They don't worship a supernatural being. It's only a religion if you use a much looser definition, which would also include so many other things as to be essentially meaningless for this
comparison, like playing golf, for example.
Xenu wasn't supernatural? L Ron might disagree.
Pyramid scheme with cult like enforcement.
It's a religion to them. Like Al Gore's global warming is a religion to warmists.
It's science. It's like saying that it's a religion to believe that the earth is round.
Scientology is science? How?
imnsho, most religions are cults. Apologies to anyone who may take offense, but resultant from my studies, they are.
