Are most hashtags on social media pointless other than to see what is trending?

In my 4 years of SOH that is probably the most true statement you made. You should feel proud my friend.

No. On Twitter they're extremely useful to find tweets about a given subject. This can be very useful if you're at a conference that has an associated hashtag, or, say, if there's some local event, including a disaster, to get up-to-date information.

The latter was extremely useful here during the bad wildfires near town a couple years ago.

It's just a tool to gather information or have a larger conversation without having to follow all the participants (you may not have even known they existed

or had accounts), & may be especially useful for temporary things.

Also, I'll tell you something about using them to see what's "trending": I think for the most part, that's not useful. I don't really give a hoot what a large number of people on Twitter are talking about - mostly those are the most inane,

annoying, argumentative, or just dumb conversations. An exception to that is when there is some major event happening in the U.S. or in the world (again, often a disaster) - sometimes that can be a great way to get breaking news - but even then, it's

usually interspersed with inanity, & sometimes inaccurate reports.

On Facebook, I think they're pretty much useless & dumb - except sometimes as humorous "asides" (& they can function like that on Twitter too).

Yea good point. I knew that you could look things up but the most common hashtags with millions of posts people would rarely search for.
