They do the crime they serve the time. Serving their sentence could be considered contempt.

Imo, that does no one any good. Even if that person learned and never does that deed again, how can they be expected to understand the gravity if they don't suffer the consequences? The only sure lesson they've learned is that it is possible to avoid

I guess it would depend on the crime and the punishment. I'd probably pay a fine for someone, but I ain't doin time!
