I've been hearing a lot of ridiculous conspiracy theories lately: Do human beings have an innate compulsion to assign sinister meaning to honest, straightforward and generally non-sinister things?
I think it has a lot to do with our fear of the unknown. When something has a vague and symbolistic meaning, we want to assign a more concrete meaning to it.
That paired with our fascination with all things supernatural and sinister compels us to give it a dark meaning, often the opposite of it's genuine meaning.
