Should it be illegal for public employees to use personal email for official public business?

If you want to keep your email private don't use it to conduct public business.

What about Dick Cheney and Colin Powell?

They both used their private email for government business. Even business on the War on Terror

Then damn them too, party affiliation doesn't grant you special privelages.

At the federal level, it already is. Here.

If I were to do what Hillary did, I assure you there would have been a swift investigation and incarceration. I would be in jail.

I said no, because there are times when official email is down and something MUST be handled RIGHT now. I know, I'm the IT guy. Using personal email for business, is strongly discouraged. If it's sensitive or classified, no way.

If you are not smart enough to separate your private email from your work email then you are not smart enough to work for me!

I feel it depends on the job

The government wants to take everything away from the people, but not themselves

Well it's not against the law, and this poll is pretty directed to Hillary, and she did break the law, or is hiding from it. Should there be a law? I don't think it's necessary.

I mean to say didn't. She didn't break the law.

Actually, she did. She violated FIPS 140-2, under Public Law 104-106. FIPS is a federally mandated requirement for all government Information Systems and Information Processing.

And she is currently under investigation by the FBI for using her personal email to handle classified data.

She didn't break the law, and she not being investigated for criminal activity.

The NY Times said that they messed up the story. Look it up. Also I don't just follow liberal news outlets *The more you know*

To easy to hide stuff you don 't want to reveal. Like Hillary did.

Absolutely. It side-steps important archiving and auditing. We has the public have an interest in the information public officials generate in an official capacity.

Policy, not law. Why does everything that is common sense need to be a law???

We need laws like this because this country has FAR too many characterless Democrats. Even with a law we'd have people like Ms Clinton who'd look for ways to get around it rather than follow the law.

07/27/15 8:17 am

Nobody is using common sense anymore. If it's not written in a law it seems like nobody can do what makes sense. I don't think more laws will fix it.

Think, replace 'Democrats' with 'politicians' and I would agree with you. This has been practice among public employees/politicians for a while. It's only become big news because political opponents are using it against Hilary.

It would depend on what the emails contain.

07/26/15 8:16 pm

I cannot count the times I've used personal email for work. I'm not a public employee so that is different but that should be against the rules but not illegal.

Of course. I didn't even know this was in dispute.

Work = use work email
Personal = use personal email
