13 months ago I bought a new touchscreen laptop. Two days ago I tripped and fell onto the laptop COMPLETELY shattering the screen. Luckily my friend's husband is a computer engineer and will be repairing it for me for a little over $200. Ouch.

At less than one year old, my PC quit on me. I have no real need to replace it so I decided to go mobile. I'm in the process of moving all my local files to redundant cloud services and plan to strictly use the web.

Yes. Two new PCs, both had the new, wondrous, ultimate iOS, Windows 8.

I hate Windows 8 !!!!
Can hardly wait for the W 10 on July 29th, it is supposed to go back to a W 7 form for free corrective download & install.

Windows 8 is good. Try a free piece of software called Classic Shell. It adds the old start menu back.

Just make sure to disable the other two options for classic explorer and classic browser, I think.

Woop. Thanks for the info, but I'll wait for W10 because it is being offered free to correct the W 8 s snafu. I know, Im asking for it again.

Kinda. I re-built my old machine, but it's 95% new parts. Just an old hard drive and the case remain the same. Also an internal card reader.

Nope. I built a custom PC in 2013 and have been using it since then.

My Dell laptop went mental 1 day (a few days later, it was fine but i had already given it away) & my WiFi wouldn't work so I had to run an ethernet cord through the house or use my desktop. Since I work pt for Google, I got a chromebook....

No, but soon. I've mostly picked out the parts, I'm just waiting to see if there will be any serious compatibility issues with 10, or any good sales because of it.

goalie31 OrthodoxCatholicChristian
07/27/15 4:23 am

Windows 10 will be more compatible with hardware than Windows 8. The OS is how the program's communicate with the hardware. Each new OS is designed to be more hardware compatible than the previous one

07/27/15 6:00 am

Goalie, I have been doing this since the Dos 2.1 days. The problem is the vendor supported drivers. They don't feel the need to write new drivers for obsolete hardware when the new OS comes out. It is not cost effective for them or low priority

07/27/15 6:03 am

P.S. I still remember when a 30 Mbyte hard drive was a huge deal. Most PCs didn't even have hard drives.

goalie31 OrthodoxCatholicChristian
07/27/15 6:24 am

You can run old drivers in Windows Compatibility mode. Put the disc in with the drivers. Right click on the driver and run in compatibility mode for 95, 2000, XP etc. The new network card I bought for my PC was made for Windows 7. That's what

goalie31 OrthodoxCatholicChristian
07/27/15 6:25 am

I did and it works just fine. Windows is extremely hardware friendly. I've only been doing this 2 years but I'm in school for Database Management at Pitt

Which model and for what use please.

Sam95 Nebraska
07/27/15 7:33 am

Mac Book Pro with 13.3 retina display. And I use it for college.

07/27/15 1:17 pm

If I remember correctly, the 13" doesn't come with an SD port or a disc right? What do you use for a wordprocessor?

Sam95 Nebraska
07/27/15 1:47 pm

You are correct about no disc, but there is an SD card slot. And as for the word processor, I use Pages. Pages is not compatible with my professors computers so I have to convert it to a Word doc (which is really easy once you figure it out).

Sam95 Nebraska
07/27/15 1:48 pm

A lot of other computers aren't compatible with Pages yet. If you get an apple laptop and need help figuring out how to convert a pages document to a word document then feel free to dm me and I can walk you through it.

07/27/15 1:51 pm

That's great Sam. Thanks much.

MacBook Air. Some of my family members purchased Chromebooks; they really like them and they're not too expensive either

07/27/15 5:21 am

Thinking about one to replace my desktop. What's your experience so far?

NYG44 Upstate NY
07/27/15 6:27 am

For the MacBook Air? I haven't really used that yet because I pretty much only got it for when college begins. The Chromebook is really nice though it really can't replace a desktop in many areas except for internet browsing.

NYG44 Upstate NY
07/27/15 6:29 am

If you're looking for something that you will be writing documents on and printing stuff, you don't want to get a Chromebook.

Newegg has a series of videos on YouTube that are very useful on your first build. is excellent for ensuring you choose compatible parts and for finding the best price.

goalie31 OrthodoxCatholicChristian
07/27/15 4:27 am

Or go to newegg and get great deals. There are only a couple things you need to look out for with compatibility. MB to Case, CPU to MB, RAM to MB, and HDD/SSD to MB

Komm No. I am your father
07/27/15 4:59 am

Newegg frequently has the best deal. If not then it's almost always Amazon. But occasionally someone else will save you a few bucks. Newegg provides a lot of mail in rebates.

goalie31 OrthodoxCatholicChristian
07/27/15 5:01 am

I'm a premier member on newegg. Free shipping as well as exclusive deals. It's awesome. I've only ever found a better deal on Amazon once and it was a heat sink/fan I got the Noctua DH-15. It's great for OC

07/27/15 5:03 am

Nice. I'm just a lowely regular newegger. They do have good deals that's for sure. I'm a Amazon prime member so the free 2 day shipping is pretty nice

goalie31 OrthodoxCatholicChristian

Amazon prime is some good stuff... Especially with the college discount $50/year

I haven't purchased a PC/laptop in the past year, but MAN, do I want that new Mac Pro! The Mac Pro Tower I have now, was purchased in 2008. It's been considered 'vintage' for 2 years now. It'll soon be an antique!😢

Same here. It's virtually impossible to find a Windows 7 machine, and Windows 8 sucks almost as bad as a Mac. I've heard (and seen) that Windows 10 will be much better though.

I bought a MacBook Air back in November. I wanted to get a windows laptop but after trying out windows 8 I thought it was horribly unintuitive. I figured if I had to relearn an OS I might as well try out the Mac. So far so good...

07/27/15 5:32 am

Me too shygal. My desktop is Windows 7 and I'm usually on my iPad. The wife wants a pad or modern laptop. Think our daughter has convinced her to go with MacBook Air. I'm okay with it with an eye toward it replacing the desktop. Windows 10 may tempt?
