Do you listen to music while you work?
I heard that video game music (well, non-remixed at least, I suppose) is great at providing mental stimulation while simultaneously not destroying your focus. Can anyone confirm/deny this?
I do when I can, I work faster with music. However it is against the rules.
Working on homework? Yes. Sitting at the office, working? One can only dream that it would be acceptable..
Love listening to music, but sometimes a little too distracting when trying to learn high level math concepts. For things that require less focused brain power, music is nice to have.
Depends on the kind of work
I listen to music almost 24/7
All the time, it keeps my sanity in tact.
Music teacher. Part of my job description. Although when listening to my beginning band kids play, the line between "music" and "noise" is very blurry.
Ha. Music is my work. So absolutely.
Kenny G for calm
EDM for getting shit done
Everyday, I'd fall asleep without it.
Yes, that's one of the few times I listen to it. Exercise goes better with music. 👯🎶🎶🎶
Spotify all day. Music varies from day to day.
No, the positions of dishwasher and busses don't really allow for listening to music on headphones
Half the time. I listen to music when doing or grading math, but not when reading or writing.
Classical when I need to concentrate.
I'm not supposed to. I usually listen to music when I'm doing laundry or walking.
Yeah. I listen to music all the time. I even listen to metal when I have a headache.
Nope. I have random Netflix playing in the background
Telephone, radio, 2 way, doesn't work too well at the depths I work at.......
Silence is golden.
When I made the schedule (4-6 hours in the office), when I do paperwork at night (~45 minutes in the office), and when I order the truck (~2 hours walking around the back of the store) I do. Other than that, no.
Not at my job. Only calm instrumental while studying. Anything else destroys my focus.
Unfortunately it is usually someone else's Country music drivel. If I hear "Your Lips Taste Like Sangria" one more time . . . 😡😖
I love that song.
It is played an awful lot on country stations, though...same with Girl Crush.
Girl Crush is one of the songs that will make me change stations. I really, really like "John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16" right now. I don't know why.
Not often. For mindless work, I put on movies or tv shows in the background. But for detailed grading or writing I need minimal distractions.
Even with the advice in the article to pick the least distracting music? Or is all music distracting?
Depends on how much concentration I need. When I'm grading easy writing or reading for basic content, some music is fine. I have a few selects songs I've listened to since college while I work. But when I need to pull a lot out of it, I need silence.
Well, not silence, but essentially white ambient noise. Nothing discernible or catching.
Spiritual music especially in the morning. Some afternoons it's MJ or shake it, drop it at my desk. Lol!
Well, I mean I work at Hot Topic...so no, I listen to screaming adults who act like high school freshmen.
Why are they screaming?
I think he talking about the musicians not the customers.
Around the house not usually... in an office usually.
Talk radio more often.
All the time. 😎
I usually control the tunes when I'm at work. Those of you who have been tuning into my music polls already know that it can be unbearable at times 😁
Yes, mainly classical with headphones. That's the only way I can concentrate.
I wish I could. But I basically work for satan.
What do you do for satan?
I'm stealing people's souls at Walmart.
I always figured satan as a Kmart guy
Is Kmart still around? Hahah have you ever been to walmart? I think satan works on a large scale.
That would be kinda hard to do.
Why? You an astronaut?
I work nights, the noise would wake up people I don't intend to wake up. Bad enough I get enough hassle when I wake the people I have to.
What about headphones
That's how we get our assignments to find out where to go next.
"Yes"! Every Friday, it's music all day! I have Sirius Satellite Radio, with several preset stations. Lithium, Octane, Faction, Joint, Groove, Chill, Classic Rewind, and 80's on 8! With those I'm set from Sun to Sun!
Yep. Lithium starts it all off, EVERY Friday, 2:30AM! The other stations may vary in rotation, but it all begins with Lithium...
That sounds like a blast! Now, I think I need a Sirus radio!
It's kinda cool! It's in my Jeep, at work thru a mini-satellite receiver, my Apple desk top, and an app on my iPhone.
It offers MUCH more than music, and music is ALL separated exclusively by genre, except a few cases where it's separated by decade.
Here, check out the lineups...
Very cool! Thanks for sharing! That may have just moved it to the top of my wish list... Maybe if I'm a good girl Santa will bring it to me. 😁
I have it in my car and my job has them in my truck as well. No commercials and the same pop crap playing over and over.
Flamenco guitar or classical music occasionally :)
Selectively. If I'm diving into a task that requires analysis or calculation, I have tunes going in my office. I think it stimulates my analytical side.
Bee Gees on Pandora, baby!
I manage a roller skating rink so there is always music playing. If you're ever in Woodstock GA come to Hot Wheels Skating Center!
Only when I'm doing something physical. If I'm trying to think it's not very helpful.
Depends on the work. Music is great for mindless tasks. Not so good when I need to think.
Same for me. When I really need to concentrate, music is a distraction. But while doing routine tasks, music is nice.
Only when it is scheduled. I was an elementary school teacher. Now that I am retired, I still don't.
Actually I've reached the point where I can't work without music on
It's so much easier to do calculus while I'm listening to music.
When I "work" around the house, yes, but when I was still working at a job that required focus, never. The last thing I would have wanted would be more background noise or another distraction. And, it wasn't allowed anyway.
