Should a person need a license to be a babysitter?
But maybe a cpr course
A baby sitting license? Seriously? So what, 15 year olds have to get licensed to watch their neighbor's kid now? No,I don't think so. Just think about the insane regulations that would result. What's next? Maybe you need a license to be a parent too?
I think so. My sisters have told me some minor horror stories about babysitters when their kids were little. I have no kids, so I can't say, but I can only rely on that
One of my sisters said daycare waa so expensive and they were sometimes bad, sometimes terrific. But when my mom retired, she was more than willing to babysit her kids.
They should take courses in CPR, what to do in certain emergencies, ways to deal with unruly kids that type of thing.
In some form yes.
I only use care.com for my kid (unless we know the person) because they run background checks and many have child CPR certs. Licenses would be hard to govern
A Babysitter no. A daycare center Yes.
Would an older sibling need a license to watch his younger?
The answare to this will vary if you have kids or not!! Does this app track this? Maybe it should. I have kids and I would not mind paying more for a certified babysitter. We have live in nanny so it does not matter, but if I did not.. Certification!
Maybe not a license but a certificate of competency and training to insure they are prepared. Some school or organizations offer this service.
Oh course they should would you want someone random person to look after your children
I think it's hilarious that more people think u should have a license to do manicures than to watch your kids...
That's really sad
Every time I hear "license" I hear the government asking "how can we squeeze any money out of this?"
Nothing would be more frustrating than a young teen girl having to go to the DMV to get a baby sitting license and file taxes 😂
I don't know about babysitting but a person should have a license to have a baby.
Training yes, license no.
Yes and no if your just a teenager babysitting for your neighbor or something and they know you then no but if youre a stranger then yes it would be a good idea
How would you regulate what a "stranger" constitutes? How much tax payer money are you willing to spend on this
Like if youre doing it for a proffession not just for some extra money on while youre in high school
What if you're retired? I could come up with hundreds of valid 'what ifs'. This is why regulation of little things like this can get out of hand
Career like working in a daycare or something where the parents arent directly involved in picking the person
Everyone should be certified to watch kids. You never know what kind of dangerous things happen to the kids.
If you want to make sure that your babysitter is an upstanding person, pay for your own background check.
I think parents even need a license...
Yes for non-family
I also agree this is a fucking retarded idea
I'm not talking anything complex just a small class at the local rec department so you know how to care for very young children id say it would only really be necessary for sitters taking care of infants because they actually do need special care
This question needs to be clarified, I think. Someone babysitting kids full-time is a vastly different situation than someone watching kids for date night.
It's an unfair burden on teenagers. Parents need to be responsible for vetting babysitters.
For a professional service, maybe. For people you know, a friend, or a kid down the street, no.
It's too basic to require a license for. Even a 10 year old could watch a baby for a period of time.
Sure, but parents should have to get licensed before they can have kids, too.
I'm babysitting right now! I answered the door when the pizza man came. I'm watching the little boy play video games and telling the little girl how cute her playdoh creations are. Why would I need a certification for this?
So in 15 years when you get accused of child abuse you can hold out a piece of paper give a whiny face and say "but I was certified...I must be innocent"
No, but personally, I would feel better with a babysitter who had taken a class and had first-aid training.
Haha, of course not. That's beyond silly.
Wow..that would really put parents with many offspring at a disadvantage. Can't make the older ones in charge of the younger ones anymore.
They can, the older one just needs to complete a 7 week course and pay a $1000 license fee. And do 2 weeks of continuing education each year.
Like I said Disadvantage
I know I was just being sarcastic 😜
No, no, and FUCKING NO! How would you test somebody for licensing? Change a diaper? Order pizza? No murders in your background check? You pass. Everybody can already do that! The government would slow and worsen everything. Seriously people?!
That would invite a deluge of unnecessary government control. But then what else if new?
I understand pieces of paper printed on heavy stock make people feel safe, but I suggest you let private companies handle the certifications. Then if it's really important to you, you can only go to businesses that are privately certified
No government required here
We need to ask the government for permission before we do anything...
There should be a government department that regulates SOH comments
Before my mom let me babysit as a teenager, she signed me up for a first aid/cpr class at our park district.
That's a good route to take. I took the classes as well, and if/when I hire a sitter for my kids I will look for those who already took the classes. It's good info to know.
No but only because a lot of babysitters do it informally (ie are teenagers, neighbours or relatives)
No. Our babysitter is not licensed and we managed all on our own to check her references and legal history, and took the time to build trust before leaving her alone with the kid.
No government required.
A nanny state? Lol! The government shouldn't license ANYTHING! Private companies can set standards that're better & better managed than government.
Stop depending on a flawed/greedy/ corrupt system to take care of you. Grow up. Take responsibility
Private, for-profit, companies are often greedy and corrupt. Public oversight keeps it from spiraling out of control. It takes both for the system to work. The greediest, most dishonest people I know are all adults.
Stop jacking off to Big Gubment. You'll get a sex-offender charge. 👎😞
Sailing around...they can
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means
How do rich people control my life? Specifically
I love the fiber wealthy.
Soooo much fiber.
*Homer Simpson drooling noises*
So politicians should control your life because they're never greedy or intelligent and will always make you do what is best for yourself.
...or not, haha.
Sailing, still waiting on an answer...
Hmm, I guess sailing was just full of shit
For a daycare yes, a babysitter no.
I agree with you. I answered no for the question because a babysitter is different than someone working in daycare.
If they're saying they are a professional, then a license (spelling?) would seem better. As for just a babysitter who doesn't claim to be a professional, then no.
Maybe to watch more than two or three kids at a time, as a regular job, but generally no.
No. It's the parents responsibility to make sure their kids are in good hands.
Absolutely. I want to know that they've been checked out and trained.
That's what the parents job is
Yes, but I want them to be checked and trained by a professional who has gone to school specifically for that. Parents don't know everything.
Neither do the people handing out "certifications"
Then why not just hire them from a private agency that takes care of doing all that?
We hired a nanny from an agency for exactly that reason when I was in grad school. They took care of training and validating according to their standards.
Professional certified to watch kids for a couple hours while you go to dinner?
Some parents are single moms trying to go through school and work. They have to leave their children in child care for 40+ hours a week. It's not just a few hours a week with the next door neighbor while the parents go on a date.
"I want them to be checked and trained by a professional who has gone to school specifically for that."
Holy shit, is that what you think regulators do? They're just assholes off monster.com. No one goes to school to give our certificates
It's a false sense of security
Jmw, that's not called babysitting then, that is child care. And it is not only single mom's who need it. That is any normal couple with kids. There is a difference between those two things.
I guess. But there are many programs for teens to teach them how to be babysitters. I think at least a certification of some sort would be good.
I learned by babysitting my sister. That's often how many kids start, siblings.
Professionally, yes they should; as a service to a friend or neighbor, no.
They'd unionize there goes the cost.
Depends on whether it's a day care service with a bunch of kids or your teenage neighbor.
You should need a license for everything. If you're not licensed, you're a danger to society.
We need a bigger government to handle more license stuff
You're joking, right?
Sarcasm level = master
Are you licensed for that level of sarcasm?
Of course I am. And I have continuing education classes in sarcasm that I take every year too to keep it
Well that's a relief. I feel so much safer laughing at a professional's sarcastic comments.
