Inspired by an interesting conversation I had with a stranger at the coffee shop this morning: Is it possible that the entire fossil record is a carefully crafted hoax?
The only way I think the fossil record could be falsified is by an omnipotent being.
"down below the mines and sea ooze and fake fossil bones put there by a Creator with nothing better to do than upset archeologists and give them silly ideas."
-Sir Terry Pratchett
I'm sure there's like a .000001% chance is possible, but not really.
Unlikely; that would've taken years of global travel hundreds of years ago and/or amazing communication and coordination. Fossils are real.
Must've been some good weed you were smoking.
Lol he made that argument, not me. As you know, I'm a biologist 😄
I didn't know that.
Oh, well now you know 😄
I thought you were in college?
I am. I graduate in May
If coordination like that were possible, we'd have world peace, no homeless, starving, poor, etc.
Anything is possible, but this is highly unlikely.
The stranger in question identified himself as a tourist (aka shoobie) from Iowa.
How did he argue against fossils being legitimate?
He told me that scientists over the years have planted fossils that they made themselves, and then "discovered" them. A big conspiracy or something. When I heard the phrase "war on god", that's when I had to politely excuse myself from the convo lol
Lol sounds like an interesting morning. Wish I was there to hear him spew his theories haha.
Well the planting of fossils has occurred, but to suggest that the entire fossil record was planted is quite a stretch.
Apparently that person has never seen fossils in nature. I've never seen dinosaur fossils in situ, but I grew up in an area that had literally tons of invertebrate fossils in ALL the local stream beds and many hillsides. Any time new construction or
or a new road cuts into a hillside, more fossils are exposed. They're not as dramatic in size as dinosaurs etc., but they are so extremely numerous that it's just inconceivable that anyone "planted" them there.
