Etymology Monday (Late again, sorry!): 'Prepare' is a pretty simple derivative -- 'pre' meaning 'before' and 'pare' meaning 'to cut'; it's origins are culinary and basically mean 'to get the food ready for cooking by doing all of the chopping.'
