Does the average MidEasterner endorse leaders who commit atrocities and fail to follow International Rules of War or are they coerced into acceptance?
I can't leave a comment after reading yours, hammer. You are right on.
Thanks. That is a real compliment.
I believe it is coercion. The point you make below are very good ones. Sometimes coercion comes in the form of death threats or torture; other times it comes in the form of societal pressure....
I believe the take away message is, if you do not conform, there will be consequences and those consequences will be negative.
Was your answer in any way pressured by a desire to conform? LOL
LOL. No, I am not a conformist. I just don't conform in secret.
As you well know SOH was built for the sole purpose of allowing me, Hammering Man to demonstrate intellectual and verbal
gymnastics. So I'll toss out that I suspect that there are many social customs to which you conform. Perhaps for your own
convenience, but conformation, none-the-less.
Well, Mr. Expert, you would be right. :)
Hammering fist demands obedience!
There is no freedom when the expression of freedom is punished.
Like in our own educational system, public primary schools and colleges, I couldn't agree more!
The question probes at a complex issue. Citizens in most cultures seek to live a peaceful productive life. Social conformity is a critical element. "In Rome do as the Romans do"
Changing the fabric in any society requires far more action than replacing leadership. The culture itself, including moral valuesmust be considered before any hope that either financial orviolent intervention will have an enduring effect.
I believe we have a blindly misunderstood these critical points in many of our international interventions.
